Thinking about going cheap...Need input.

So, I am really considering just buying cheap rims for the look. I was browsing and found these XXR 522 rims. They are heavier than the stock Rays wheels by 7lbs, but I'm not really going for performance; just for looks. I can get a set of staggered fitment of 19x8.5 in the front and 19x10.0 in the rear for under $600 shipped.

Here's something crazy that I want to do. I want to make one side of the car gold and the other black, so I am going to be purchasing 1 black 19x8.5 and 19x10.0 for the right side and 1 gold 19x8.5 and 19x10.0 for the left side. I think it will look awesome for a cheap cost.

Give me some input. Here are the wheels if you don't know what they look like.

Mismatching rims? Err, it if makes you happy. :)

TongMan 11-23-2010 01:03 AM

Jamaica, cool I didn't notice that you thought of the one sided rims idea.

Thor, its not really mismatching, but just different colors and same rims. Other drivers really only see one side of the car anyways.

I like it. Gotta be a trendsetter. As long as you like thats what matters. Your car your money. Go for it. Be unique. I have four different sets of wheels sometimes your gotta switch it up to find something you like.

exactly. I've always like the idea of mismatching rims, when done properly.

let us know how it goes

Really? You are just going for looks and you are going to mix the wheel colors?

Also, I know you said you didn't care about performance, but adding wheel weight is the absolute worst place to add weight.

TongMan 11-24-2010 09:11 AM

There aren't many options to buy a set of new 19" rims that weighs less than the stock Rays wheels. Unless I have 5 grand to spend.

TongMan 11-24-2010 05:46 PM

What do you guys think about 19x10 in the rears and 18x9.5 in the fronts?

nismo 1234 11-24-2010 08:40 PM

my buddy has the same set of rims on his s2000.. rims are good especially wiht low offset the concave is really nice.. one donwside tho, its really easy to get a scratch mark on the black ones. but i think the scratch is just on the clearcoat(not sure if there is clear coat on it but it looks like it) but its not noticeable.

you should have 19's all around.

TongMan 11-25-2010 02:09 AM

I'm open to criticism, but I really don't see anything negative about doing this. I've wanted the gold rims look and I've always loved the blacked out look. So I thought "why not enjoy both?" Like I said before, it'll look nice from either side.

Mike 11-25-2010 09:27 AM

I like the idea of different colors or even different rims on each side, if they weigh the same and have the same specs. You can never see both sides of the car at once anyways.

Hey mike did you get my email?

TongMan 11-26-2010 09:34 AM

Ok. After doing plenty more research about these XXR 522, I now dislike them. The spokes sticks out past the rim diamter and it looks unattractive from the side view. I'm not getting the XXR 522 anymore. I looked at the XXR 521, but they do not come in 19" sizes. I do not want to go 20", so that rim is off the list.

I still like the idea of mismatching wheels from left and right sides. I am looking at the Avant Garde M310 now. But these are expensive at $1200 a set.

Jamaica 11-26-2010 09:40 AM

Why not 20s? Are you planning to use your stock tires? I found out sometimes 19 inch tired are more expensive then 20. Sometimes you have to pay to play.

VIP-STATUS 11-26-2010 01:58 PM

check the offset too ok,or your going to be paying more $$ for spacer too:tiphat:

$1200 is still entry level for a set of 19" rims.
You wanna play, you gotta pay!

There is a D1 Drifting team whos car uses two different colored wheels on either side of the car. I thinks its a RX-7 with neon Yellow on one side, and neon pink on the other. I think it looks pretty cool. But of course the car is all decked out, turbo, roll cage, graphics, suspension, etc......Meaning its a whole lot easier for them to get away with it being a racing (drifting) car.
