Tire Inner Sidewall Separation
All,
I need some advice. Today on the way home from work, I got a flat. I saw my tire pressure light come on, then the back wheel started to shake slightly. I pulled over to change the tire and was surprised when I took the old one off. The entire inner sidewall was separated from the rest of the tire. Does this sound like a defect or something that I did? I did see a screw in the tire as well, but it was in there pretty good so it doesn't look like air could leak out of it. The car has about 18,000 miles on it. Any chance the Nissan dealer will do anything to change this for free? Any advice? Thanks in advance. Alex |

If you have a little too much negative camber you could wear the inside corner of the tire out and cause the sidewall to separate like that.

i wouldn't bother even asking them. be happy that you got 18 out of the tires. what probably happened is the screw caused the leak, causing you to get the flat and drive on the tire for a bit and that caused the separation. just be happy you didn't damage your rim. at 18k i'd just go buy a whole new set of tires if i was you. check out the hankook ventus v12 evo if you're not looking to break the bank.

This is also a possibility. If you were driving around on a tire with low pressure you could experience some abnormal wear on inner and/or outer sidewalls, which could cause the separation.

Well 18k is pretty much nearing the maximum life of the Sport stockers. I think I got 18,500 out of mine.

Thing is the Ventus V12s which go for $175-200 per are better than the stockers!

RE-11 if you have the loot, Hankook has pretty decent reviews if your on a budget. Either way, 18k miles for high performance tires are the average lifespan, soft material. You might be able to stretch the front tires a little longer, maybe up to 25k-30k under normal driving. OP, I doubt the dealer or manufacturer will be any help. They will prorate the amount of tread left over and most likely say it's too worn out. Worth a shot, but it would be easier to just buy a 2 new tires and call it a day. They should at least be replaced as a pair anyways.

Ah, unfortunate news. Yes the car is stock height.
Looks like I'll be checking out tirerack.com tonight for some replacements. I assume I'll be ok driving on the spare for a couple days. Any other suggestions on places to buy? Tires.com/Discount tire seems to be more expensive than tirerack. There aren't any retail stores that can compete are there? Thanks for all of the quick replies. |
