anti theft lugs
Anyone have any comments on using anti theft lugs? Do they work well? I would think thieves would have a device for anything they come across. Would it be beneficial to use 2 0r 3 different sets of them and mix match or do their methonds bypass the coded part of the lug altogether? I swear after seeing some of the pics on posts of stolen wheels Im thinking of puting 3 "clubs" on each wheel when I park it. Car comes any day so Im trying to be pro active. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. P.S. anyone in the Long Island area want to start a wheel thief vigilante club??? We can just park our cars in bad areas at night and hide in the bushes. I have a great place to hide the bodies! I figure we can really clean this place up in a month or two!

they sort of work... the ones that fill the bores would work better.
if the dealer didn't steal my stock lugs when they installed the locks i would not be using the locks at all, actually. it's just annoying needing that key each time. |

Directed (DEI, Viper, Clifford, etc) 500T. They're CHEAP, like $10/$20. I had one of these on the front and rear of my 240SX. Think of a contact suspended by a rubber band. Any jerking motion vertically will set it off (usually from jacking the car up).

I don't think wheel locks are worthless, but they're not going to deter a sincere and determined thief. Security is always about layers. Some petty thieves walk around just pulling door handles to see what's open, and only stay long enough in a victim car to toss it for loose change. Lock the doors? Ok, well if you have something fancy sitting out, some thief will break your car window and snatch it. Get an alarm? If said prize is valuable enough and the thief desperate enough, they'll risk it, especially if the car is parked in a prime location (dark, far from the house, etc).

I thinks that locks are worth it, Its one more mission they have to go through to get your wheels. They will give up and go to the next guy that doesn't have them.

If they want the wheels bad enough they can always just tow your car away. But the key is to make it as tough as possible for them. Park in crowded well lit areas when you are out. Wheel locks, alarms and even video surveillance (you would be surprised how cheap you can do this) are all good options. You can buy one of the CF card video cameras (less than $100) that record all day and mount it in a hidden spot near where you park (maybe in a tree or on your house). At least you will have something to show the police.

Wheel locks are cheap in relation to your insurance deductible so go for it. More expensive options may not be worth it since the cost of the item is greater than the effective replacement cost. That said, just park your car in a dang garage and be done with it. |
