I don't think wheel locks are worthless, but they're not going to deter a sincere and determined thief. Security is always about layers. Some petty thieves walk around just pulling door handles to see what's open, and only stay long enough in a victim car to toss it for loose change. Lock the doors? Ok, well if you have something fancy sitting out, some thief will break your car window and snatch it. Get an alarm? If said prize is valuable enough and the thief desperate enough, they'll risk it, especially if the car is parked in a prime location (dark, far from the house, etc).
