If I'm not mistaken, the question is about using 2 different sizes of tires, but simply 2 different brands.

I.E. my rear 2 tires go bald and I replace the stock Yokohama's with Hankook's. Yoko's on the front and Hankook's in the rear.

To the average Joe (read:me), that seems perfectly fine, especially if my fronts are good for another 5-10k miles (mine are wearing evenly, so it's moot to me).
