TPMS in Aftermarket wheels
How many of you actually bothered buying new TPMS units and installing them in aftermarket wheels, or do most of you just deal with the light on. My concern is just that if i were to have a sudden loss of presssure due to a road hazzard, i'd want to know before i was driving around on the rim of my wheel.
advice anyone? |
I actually bought new TPMS units. My light is still on though. Liquid G posted a method from a G37 board I think on how to reset it (yet to try it myself).
I think it's worth it to get them. But, if your concern is the off chance you'd be driving down to a rim, I assure you, you would know it with/without a light if your tire pressure drops that much. |
Why not keep your stock ones and move them over to your new wheels? Thats what I did.
|
I have considered that, but I feel like people don't want to buy the stock wheels without the sensors ( i plan on selling my stock wheels when i get the new ones). I'm basically taking a fully balanced wheel and tire with TPMS, taking out the sensor, (does this unbalance the wheel/tire?), and then the wheel has no valve stem, and then selling it. So it goes from a throw it on your car and you're ready to go type of deal to... not that.
|
I wouldnt sweat it...people will buy them without the sensor for the right price.
its way less of a hassle...you can take the stock wheels and new wheels to virtually any reputable tire shop and have them balance and swap them out...I think its more of an issue for them if you bring your own TPMS not already with wheels mounted I dont know why but it is.. |
so lets say i have had my new wheels and tires balanced. then have the TPMS installed, would those wheels now need to be rebalanced?
|
yep.
|
hence why do it all at once..
|
annoying. my wheels are coming to me mounted and balanced already. so basically that is a total waste. i am best off keeping my tpms from my stock wheels, but i have no way of sending these to where i am ordering the wheels because they will be on my car until i receive my new wheels. so annoying this tpms stuff is. i'm starting to just say forget it. it seems my only choices are to BUY new ones (500 bucks down the toilet) send them to the wheel company to have them mounted and balanced with the wheels. or keep my oem ones, when my wheels come have them put in, and then balanced again. Or just no sensors.

If it were me... buy the sensors. Do you want to risk the loss of an expensive wheel and tire because of a problem that the sensor could notify you about (before any damage resulted)? Or, you could remove the sensors from the OEM wheels and use them in your new wheels (to save you some $$). |

My winter aftermarket rims has TPMS. They are $360 from Tirerack. As per Tirerack, they only sell OEM TPMS sensors for 370Z. (if you do decide to get them, please use the tirerack link from my sig. It helps the forum)
Do they worth? absolutely in my opinion. I had a slow leak last winter. Thanks to the TPMS, I was able to find out about it as soon as my tire pressure went below 27 PSI. So I fixed it right away. If I didn't have the TPMS, I would have no way of knowing about the leak. I'd probably wake up with a flat after few days and be late to work/meeting/important task. My :twocents: |
43rs, i would keep my 19's for a winter setup, but a 19" winter set up is going to be expensive in terms of tires.... no?
Thanks AK, i think i will go that route. With that in mind, i think i'll probably end up just buying new ones for my new wheels (For summer/Fall), and once i dismount the old wheels i'll have them remove the tpms and then save those for my winter setup. Phelan, i'd love to do that... unfortunately i have about a 2 week timeframe before i HAVE to have these in order to send them to the wheel store so they can mount and balance them with them. When i look at the TPMS for the Z on tire rack, it offers me the sensors for 396 ( i guess they went up in price) and then this ATEQ TPMS reset tool for another 135. does this actually work on the Z? did anyone get this thing? "Your system includes: 315MHz Tire Pressure Sensor $396.00 for a quantity of 4 ATEQ TPM QUICKSET RESET TOOL $135.00 for a quantity of 1 Total Price: $531.00" |
AK i just saw your whole thread about the ATEQ tool. i sent them an email to ask if they have updated the software yet.

When I put my aftermarket rims on I did get new sensors. I got them cheap through Ebay. I didn't want to have the labor charge of taking the old ones out of my factory rims. I had them programmed at my local dealership and they work perfect. My recommendation is to get them. Who wants a light on all the time. People say after awhile they don't notice it but still. |

definitely snows on all four. and 18's is the winter set up i'm going to do. But yea... all four snow tires. Tire rack has a whole article on why.
"Why Four Winter Tires? I Thought I Would Only Need Two. Today's winter tires are better at providing ice and snow traction than ever before. The technology used to develop the tread designs and tread compounds has evolved beyond what you may have used previously. Every one of our tire manufacturers and 7 out of 10 vehicle manufacturers recommend four winter tires be used on rear wheel, front wheel or four wheel drive vehicles. This is because if you use two dissimilar types of tires on your vehicle, you'll have a vehicle that has a "split" personality. One end of the vehicle won't react and perform the same as the other in the dry, wet, slush and snow conditions you'll encounter before the end of winter. Especially in emergency situations, you'll find that your vehicle will probably understeer in one condition and oversteer in another. It is preferable to keep your vehicles handling as consistently as possible by "matching" all four tires. Our customers who have matched their tires tell us they're glad they made the extra investment in four winter tires (and wheels) so they can accelerate, brake, handle and better control their vehicle through winter's challenges." |
Are there any reccomended sensor brands???
|
a company called Schrader is the manufacturer of the oem ones i believe. Tire rack sells the oem sensors for 99 dollars each.
Update: the ATEQ sensor STILL does not work for our 2009/2010 Z's supposedly the update is coming in the summer. |
I don't think my wheels has the sensors and I don't have any form of error or warning.
|
I got the Advan RS-Ds to replace wheels that were stolen last week. They came in today and the dealer is putting them on right now. They just called me and told me that the stock TPMS won't "fit" on the wheels... is this true?
|
The Schrader number for these sensors is 28210. Good luck.
|
brining up an older thread... i am planning on getting some SSR's wrapped with new tires but i wont be running TPMS. 2 questions:
1) is the TPMS light on the large screen or is there a small icon in the cluster? - i like to show ambient temp all the time on the large screen and would be clumsy to scroll screen each time. 2) does the car make audible warniing each time i start the car without TPMS telling me there's something wrong with the TPMS? |

2.)No |

thanks zat!! i can live with this. :p my dd has TPMS icon on all the time. |
i say the tpms are only worth it if you can get them used for cheaper, like <200. they are 100 each if you get them new, its absurd.
|
yep, i dont really care about the light because i check psi on my cars regulary...and i can tell when the tires are getting squashy (lower psi) from the response. :)

Im getting the same wheels soon, did the sensors end up fitting? If not how did you deal with the situation? |

TPMS STRAIGHT SENSOR ADAPTER + TPMS BRACKET ADAPTER. I had the dealer put them on, afaik everything fits great, no issues. |

Sorry to revive this thread but I had a general question (this is my first post on the forum):
I have 20 Inch TSW Wheels on my Z and these had the TPMS sensors. I had them for a year or so can confirm they were working (as the light came on during cold mornings and I would fill it up and the light would disappear) Yesterday, I took these off and threw on my spare set (also TSW) but they do NOT have TPMS sensors on it. I decided not to buy another set of sensors since I usually check it once a week before I drive my Z. I checked the pressure on the spare set and was on my way, expecting the light to come on soon. But it never did. I probably drove about 25-30 miles and still nothing. Thoughts? |

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression that the system would pick it up immediately. I guess I'll patiently wait for the famous light to come on.
