Which powder coating for my Rays?

4 Attachment(s)
I am thinking about powder coating my stock 19" Rays. So far I'm thinking about a ~80% gloss black or a dark gunmetal (like the Advan RS or the stock coating on the brake calipers), both either with or without a solid red time attack pinstripe. If I went with the pinstripe it would be added later as the company I would be using only handles the powder coating.

I may also consider powder coating the brake calipers red to match the car, but that all depends.

Here are some quickies from Photoshop. The time attack stripe is a little too thick in some places, just keep in mind that it'll be thinner.

Gunmetal

Keep in mind that the gunmetal would most likely be darker.

At this point, I'm not 100% sure what I want. I know I love the stock Rays and think the bright silver finish looks really nice.

I am pretty much torn 50/50 between black and a nice, dark gunmetal. I think gunmetal would be more interesting because it's metallic... black is more likely to be... boring.

Also, the color I choose for the wheels will most likely end up being a theme... i.e. my headlight housings will most likely be painted to match. I'm undecided on what I would do with the door handles... looking at the photoshop images they really look fine left alone, but we'll see. Brake calipers also may or may not be powder coated Solid Red.

Gunmetal with red stripe looks good IMO. How about 40th anniversary color? or something close like alexpilla or ctzn did?

The 40th anniversary is not dark enough and has too much of a bluish tint, IMO.

oh that looks really good. i think you should get it without the red stripe, i think its so played out and makes the car kinda rice. but each to their own. not judging you if you do get it. where you getting it done? ive been looking for a place to powdercoat mine so quite some time now

Yeah -- I'd have to get it done separately anyways so if I like it without I won't add it.

I'm going to take them to the American Stripping Company down in Manassass. They are supposed to be really good. All they do is consumer and industrial coatings.

The gunmetal would be a little bit like the Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider 16Ms with the gunmetal wheels and headlight housings, only mine would be a much darker gunmetal. I think it'd look good. Kind of leaning towards that over the black.

I like the gunmetal, not 100% on the pinstripe with the stock wheel design (to many angles going on then a solid red circle).

I think the time attack stripe may work best on wheels that have a more defined lip.

I'm leaning towards gunmetal now, probably 70/30.

Should look really good with red calipers.

Red calipers with gunmetal will really make it pop and look very good.
Who are you going to use for the caliper powder coating?

If the wheels turn out nice I will probably just haul them down to the same company.

Gunmetal, imo.

gunmetal, lose the time attack stripe it doesn't work on the stock rays imo

puckshaw 03-26-2010 01:50 PM

I'm just a sucker for black wheels so that's what I voted for. I do like the time attack strip but agree that it just doesn't work for this wheel design.

ZCarMan 03-26-2010 07:46 PM

I like the black with time attack stripe. Time attack is timeless IMHO.
