Homemade Tire Rack

This was my first attempt at welding and fabricating in general. DEFINITELY not hard to do.

I only have the four spares, so one rack is fine.

You COULD do the same thing with 2x4's if you made a support from underneath and maybe built some shelves under the tire rack portion.... that would hold 16 tires without issue. Suspending them all from the wall on one rack may be too heavy for the span...

I was thinking of an 8 over 8 design with maybe an extra chain and cross brace in the middle if necessary.

I did find some industrial shelving that looks promising for those with lots of tires.

I think this project is best left to DIYourselfer's.... it would be hard to ship this unit because of size and weight. I sold the one extra unit I had to another member here in Zedmonton. But if you have access to a welder and metal saw, this is one easy build! I suppose you could build it with carriage bolts too, but welding is more fun!

considering the weight i'd prefer welding than trusting 230lbs above my cars with acehardware made in china 25cent bolts.

I would think that with grade 5 hardware it would be strong enough, considering these are what are probably holding your car together it should hold a few tires. Besides the pieces would be lapped such that the steel itself bears most of the weight, the bolts are just to keep it from falling apart. I might try the bolt together option as I don't have a welder. I would probably trust bolts more than my welds anyway, LOL.

so do you really think those UL labels on cheap electronics actually went through UL approval (or without some sort of major waiver)?

UL turned to self certification/testing for most categories so there are lots of loop holes now.
