Disadvantages to a squared tire set-up on a daily driver?
 

There are new tires on the horizon for me. I have the staggered Sport Rays. Running a 275 width tire at all four corners will only cost me $15 more than going with the OE 245F/275R combination.

This is a street car that will normally only see the occasional weekend cruise and canyon run. In some cases, it will find itself as a daily driver when the need comes up. There are a few upgrades to consider: The front will have adjustable FUCA's and a stiffer front bar. Although I know it can be done, I am doubtful that I'm going to spend the time or money to have these tires unmounted and rotated, so that advantage is not in play here.

It's not a matter of whether it can be done, but SHOULD it be done on a street car? Some say bigger is not always better :rolleyes:. Does this upgrade fall into that category?

The only disadvantage I experienced going to a degree setup was a 1-2 mpg hit and it follows the ruts in the road more. However, the neutrality for the handling was worth it.

Are you worried that at normal driving speeds you’re suddenly gonna spin out like you’re 10/10th at the corkscrew?

Bumming on the street it doesn’t matter, you’re never gonna be at the limit where square affects handling. We don’t need to pretend we’re time attacking to Safeways.

My Honda Fit has a square setup and I haven’t died yet, and you will be driving the same speed as me

HANDLING wise on the street, it won’t matter

Other factors are cost of a slightly wider front tire and aesthetics, as every square setup looks like garbage because the fronts stick out more than the rear

Are you planning on doing the 275 square setup on the stock Rays? Or on new wheels?

It would have been the stock Sport 19's, but I've decided to continue with the factory staggered set-up using instead 255/40R19 and 285/35R19 tire sizes. Now, if I can find an inexpensive pair or rear Sport 19's before I need tires again, I will be revisiting this idea.

If someone can find a pair of rears in the junkyard, you are all set!;)
