285/35/20 or 295/30/20?
 

Hey all

So I bought a set of wheels which came with tires, the fronts are 20x9 with 245/35/20 and the rears are 20x10.5 with 275/30/20.

I hate the look of the rear tires, not only they look stretched (which I don't like) but they actually look smaller than the front and it's pretty noticeable

So I don't want a stretched tire, and also want it to be just as tall or a tad bit taller than the front.

I've tried looking everywhere but I don't really see many people running 285/35/20 on the rear, or if they do Its hard to find pics.

305/30/20 is also an option but I'm not sure if I can do 305 in the rear with 245 in the front? The front wheels have new tires so I don't want to buy new fronts as these are new

The 295/30/20 gives me a diameter 0.22 taller than the front while 285/35/20 is about 1" taller. I wish I could see them on before deciding but that's not an option... Any suggestions or anyone with pictures that could provide some info on how these tires would look like?

285/30/20 is essentially the same diameter as 245/35/20.

Can’t do 285/35 with the current front tires, your vdc will go nuts due to diameter difference being too large.

Memory a little fuzzy, I think you have to stay within 4% difference.

Reference OEM Nismo rear to see how 285 look on a 10.5 wheel. But hey, beware some tires have thicker/beefier looking sidewall than others. Wife and I both have 285 on 10.5 on rear, hers are Michelin AS3 and mine are RE71R. Fitment on hers look much beefier. My friend saw the cars side by side and thought wife’s car had wider tires until I pointed out they were same size rubber.

Yeah the 285/35 Is about 4% difference and the 295/30 about 1%. I was not aware that same size tires could look different/thicker, so I'll stick to the 295/30/20 and get rid of this ugly super skinny stretched look!

Same size tires and rims, white is RE71R, black is AS3. See how the Michelin bulges while the Potenza is flatter.

Thanks a lot for this! Yeah I'll get the 295/30/20 and call it! I don't want a super thick tire, just wanted to make sure it wasn't stretched as I dislike the current look, but also don't want a monster tire 😂

The RE-71 is wider in your pics. That's why it doesn't look as stretched as the AS3. The bulging might look beefier in your eyes because the tire may look more round at the sidewall. Other considerations are the rubber lip to protect the wheel in the AS3 is more pronounced. I'd just jump to a 305/30 tire. It won't have the sidewall thickness of the 285, but it will definitely look wider.

I believe they need to be within 3% difference :twocents:

I have considered 305/30 and that was actually what had originally planned on getting, but after doing some reading on a few other posts, people said If I ran 305 on the rear I can't run 245 on the front, and needed to do 265/275, but since the wheels came with new 245 fronts, I'd rather save the money and keep those tires.

Now, if I can run 245/35 on the front and 305/30 on the rear, I would go for it, as long as there are no problems. Another concern I had was that I am going to install bags (kit is sitting in my garage already) and I'm not sure if the 305 would have issues with rubbing, but if fitment clears and there are no other issues, I would prefer the 305 over the 295

I decided to go with 245/35 F 305/30 R. Will post an update picture with fitment once the wheels are on!

Does anyone know what is the largest rear tire we can put on stock rays with stock suspension?

305 on the 10 inch wide rear sport rims is about the widest you want to go. Any wider and you risk the danger of rolling your sidewall. Plus the tires look goofy with a big bulging sidewall.
