Excessive powder coat orange peel?

1 Attachment(s)
I got my wheels back from a 2 stage powder coat this evening noticed what I believe is excessive orange peel. Unfortunately, it was evening so I wasn't able to get a look at them in the light which I'll do tomorrow morning. If you zoom in at the bottom of the wheel (the lip) where it says Rohana you can see what I'm talking about. I know a little orange peel can be expected with powder coat but how much is excessive?

Honestly, that looks a bit sloppy. IMO, the orange peel is excessive.

I agree with these guys as well. It just looks very uneven.

Yep, I agree with all of you, thanks for the input. I don't believe they followed the application parameters of the powder manufacturer. They have strict parameters for the top coat. I've already contacted the company and am setting up a day to take them back in.

Sorry to see this man. You've been waiting a while. Of course they'd screw 'em up. Hope they get it right this time for you

They did not follow ethics. If you see something wrong when you are done the job, fix it. Don't just send it to the customer hoping he will not notice.

I just got off the phone with Prismatic Powders technical dept. (powder manufacturer). They're emailing me information on the correct procedure for applying transparent top coats. The powder coat company should have done multiple top coats with short curing in between coats to achieve the deep red tone we were looking for. I believe they did one heavy coat. Obviously, that didn't work. The funny thing is that these guys do work for all the top car builders in So. Cal. including Chip Foose who uses them all the time.

I'd bet anything the guy that works on Chip Foose's wheels is not the one who worked on your wheels.

Yep. And my wheels got put on the back burner because they were working on other parts for said car builders that were preparing for SEMA. :shakes head: I guarantee Foose wouldn't have accepted my wheels to take to SEMA

That sucks!

Hopefully, they do you right and they take care of them.

If they don’t, send me a PM and I’ll send you the info of the shop that I used for my Tiffany Blue SSR Professor makeover.

I know it's not the same thing, but those wheels look exactly like when people using spray paint try to do one thick coat of paint instead of several light ones.

I went down and looked at the wheels in the daylifht today and they actually don't look as bad as I thought. The color on them is amazing (that picture in my other post is with a flash so they don't even look red). In the sunlight, the metallic really stands out. The orange peel is mainly on the faces. It appears they sprayed the hard to reach area's lighter (they look really good) and just sprayed the faces heavy.

I talked to them today and they said they would redo them no problem. He's going to make some minor adjustments and see if that improves the quality.
