I tried searching but did not quite find the same scenario.
- I have a high whp Z - I'm not a fan of the longevity of the R888R - I can't afford to buy 4 R888Rs every 6-7k miles So, my thought is this: - Buy R888Rs for the rear wheels only - Buy RE71Rs for the front wheels Theory: The RE71Rs will last twice as long as the R888Rs. If so, then i'll only have to spend the cost of 2 tires when the R888Rs wear out. Then the 2nd time around i buy all 4 again vs buying all 4 every 6-7k miles. Any recommendations on this? Any cons to doing the tire setup this way? |

Is this ... a street car or track car?
Because there's no way I'd burn either tire on street miles, they're not too expensive Simplest solution is one set of wheels with a DD tires and a second set of tires for track Were I to start tracking my car again, I'd grab some 18's with sticky rubber and 2 pc rotors and track pads, swap them on when I need to

Different levels of grip front vs rear bc of different tires could affect abs in a panic stop situation let alone on the track. In the rain, your rears will hydroplane before the fronts will, not safe. Yes, tires are consumables, but they are your most critical safety item on your car along with the brakes. Its not that i can't afford them, i don't want to be changing them every 6-7k miles....want something that lasts a little longer. And i've never heard anyone say RE71R & R888R were not proper tires. |

RE71R are listed 200 tread wear but wear like a 100. So you are not going to see much benefit there. Also messing with the tread type Street tires and DOT tires is a bad idea for handling for track purposes and most people will look at you like your some sort of idiot for doing it. Also even if your are not going to drive in bad weather you can't predict the stupidity of other people, a truck could be dumping water on the exit ramp because he didn't feel like emptying the water from the dumpster he was hauling, your back end will come around like it was on ice. DOT tires are meant to just get you to the track and back, not daily driving tires. Get a set of cheap Enkies and put your track tires on them and get another set for everyday IMO.
CONTINENTAL PROCONTACT TX UTQG: 400 A A Those are the highest tread wear rating tires on tire rack in sizes for the 370. Just look for the highest UTQG rating if you want mileage. There are no tires with great tread wear and great grip.

While, it is generally true that a higher tread wear rating indicates greater longevity, it should be noted that the industry does not adhere to a specified process for determining UTQG ratings. Each manufacturer determines their own grading criteria for the tread wear, traction, and temperature ratings that comprise the UTQG.

with tires. you can have traction or tread wear. You can't have both. It's a trade off. OP was asking for lots of understeer at the wrong time. I would guess mid corner.

The best fix for this issue is multiple tunes so you can run a low boost street tune making up to around 450-500 whp and run sport cup2s or equivalent on the street and still be safe and able to “enjoy” the car. Have a glory (hole) tune for dyno shootouts and and a power tune for Texas mile type stuff.
Oh, and multiple sets of wheels and tires. |

don't be a cheap bastard MDP lol i put a new set on my Z every year except this year since i only put 3500 miles on last year vs my usual 10-12k. just part of owning these toys. i just bit the bullet and bought a set of sport cup 2's for the GTR and even though i'll probably only use it 3k-4k miles this year i'll probably wear them out and need new ones next spring and so will the Z most likely. guess i'll find out in may which tires you go with. ![]()

Don't mix tire compounds. You will get some funky handling issues such as excessive oversteer or understeer. Just get RE71's all the way around or R888r's all the way around. If you do other wise, expect to be up against a curb, ditch, or Tree with a broke to hell car. We have had 2 folks do that lately. Do you want to join the club?
