Default RE71R Front & R888R Rear thoughts

I tried searching but did not quite find the same scenario.

- I have a high whp Z
- I'm not a fan of the longevity of the R888R
- I can't afford to buy 4 R888Rs every 6-7k miles

So, my thought is this:

- Buy R888Rs for the rear wheels only
- Buy RE71Rs for the front wheels

Theory: The RE71Rs will last twice as long as the R888Rs. If so, then i'll only have to spend the cost of 2 tires when the R888Rs wear out. Then the 2nd time around i buy all 4 again vs buying all 4 every 6-7k miles.

Any recommendations on this? Any cons to doing the tire setup this way?

Is this ... a street car or track car?

Because there's no way I'd burn either tire on street miles, they're not too expensive

Simplest solution is one set of wheels with a DD tires and a second set of tires for track

Were I to start tracking my car again, I'd grab some 18's with sticky rubber and 2 pc rotors and track pads, swap them on when I need to

This is a bad idea. Mixing tire/tread compounds is dangerous. Your tires are the only thing between you and the road. That’s critical on any car, it’s 100x more critical on a high hp rwd car.

Different levels of grip front vs rear bc of different tires could affect abs in a panic stop situation let alone on the track.

In the rain, your rears will hydroplane before the fronts will, not safe.

Yes, tires are consumables, but they are your most critical safety item on your car along with the brakes.

Not to be rude if you can not afford proper tires for a modded car it may be time to sell the car and buy a more affordable car.

Its a trackable street car that i will be taking to the track. And yes, that is my goal to have two sets of wheels, but i literally just spent a fortune building the car i will have to wait a bit before i can buy the 2nd set.

Good points; the car will not see rain though, i try to avoid it. Do you think abs will have that much of an issue? RE71Rs don't have quite as much grip as the R888Rs, but they are not far off. If it were not for the wheel spin i get, i would probably just get a set of the RE71Rs. Honestly, i need a 11-12" wheel in the back in addition to the R888Rs.

Its not that i can't afford them, i don't want to be changing them every 6-7k miles....want something that lasts a little longer. And i've never heard anyone say RE71R & R888R were not proper tires.

Yes proper tires but to mix tire brands has been done before but you would have to do a lot of testing so you know how the car will handle so you don’t hurt you’re self. Then you will need a new set of tires . Any sticky tire won’t last long. Mods are just expensive

RE71R are listed 200 tread wear but wear like a 100. So you are not going to see much benefit there. Also messing with the tread type Street tires and DOT tires is a bad idea for handling for track purposes and most people will look at you like your some sort of idiot for doing it. Also even if your are not going to drive in bad weather you can't predict the stupidity of other people, a truck could be dumping water on the exit ramp because he didn't feel like emptying the water from the dumpster he was hauling, your back end will come around like it was on ice. DOT tires are meant to just get you to the track and back, not daily driving tires. Get a set of cheap Enkies and put your track tires on them and get another set for everyday IMO.

CONTINENTAL PROCONTACT TX UTQG: 400 A A
Those are the highest tread wear rating tires on tire rack in sizes for the 370. Just look for the highest UTQG rating if you want mileage. There are no tires with great tread wear and great grip.

don't mix treads and compounds like others have stated.

don't be a cheap bastard MDP lol

i put a new set on my Z every year except this year since i only put 3500 miles on last year vs my usual 10-12k. just part of owning these toys.

i just bit the bullet and bought a set of sport cup 2's for the GTR and even though i'll probably only use it 3k-4k miles this year i'll probably wear them out and need new ones next spring and so will the Z most likely.

guess i'll find out in may which tires you go with.

Don't mix tire compounds. You will get some funky handling issues such as excessive oversteer or understeer. Just get RE71's all the way around or R888r's all the way around. If you do other wise, expect to be up against a curb, ditch, or Tree with a broke to hell car. We have had 2 folks do that lately. Do you want to join the club?

if i was doing track only or if i was up to 900/1000hp i'd do R888R because its the only way to hook up on the street if you give it the juice.

since i'm not even done with sourcing my FBO parts and plan on staying there for a little bit i just went Cup2. good traction and since it's gonna be mostly street/highway driving they will last me a touch longer.

i did my usual stupidity and went to max widths though.

stock 255/285..........i went 285/325

Solution seems simple. Buy your street tires and drive on those for safety and cost.

Don't go to the track until you have your track wheels

Unfortunately, mileage and grip are inversely proportional when it comes to tires. You can't have both, so you just have to pick your poison. Replace tires frequently or sacrifice grip. That is, until you get your second wheels

While, it is generally true that a higher tread wear rating indicates greater longevity, it should be noted that the industry does not adhere to a specified process for determining UTQG ratings. Each manufacturer determines their own grading criteria for the tread wear, traction, and temperature ratings that comprise the UTQG.

Talking

with tires. you can have traction or tread wear. You can't have both. It's a trade off. OP was asking for lots of understeer at the wrong time. I would guess mid corner.
