Rust on new Z1 rotors
I installed new Z1 rotors and now a
Rust is starting to form on the inner ring of the rotor face. Does anyone have a good solution for removing and/or preventing this rust ring? I have attached a picture, hopefully you can see what I'm talking about.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...78cc728ede.jpg Sent from my SM-G930T using Tapatalk |

Live with it. Same thing going on with my Z1 rotors.
|
Mine rust every time I wash the car. Go fast a brake hard or just drive it and it will go away. It is nothing to worry about. Lol if you brake like you are bedding them they will turn blue. Don't worry about that either. I think it looks cool!

It doesn't matter who's rotors they are. They all rust like that where the pads do not clamp.
|
I would worry more about how dirty my wheels are :bowrofl:
|
Wheels are dirty from rain and braking the pads in... why wash when it's going to rain again in a day or two, unless you want to clean them while it's storming for me... I'm sure my Z is cleaner than yours on a regular basis.

Paint the rotor hat with high-temp paint, and make sure you spray past all the the rust on the friction disc area. Once dry, drive your car and apply the brakes multiple times. Your pads will literally remove any excess paint, leaving anything untouched by your brake pads painted.

My Z1 front slotted rotors do the same thing. It's really not a big deal. Paint them if it bothers you. I've painted them in the past, now I just deal with it.
|
The only way to prevent rust is to exclude Oxygen from the Iron. The best way I know to do that is with high-temp paint (as mentioned above).
Make sure to get rid of over-spray on the pad contact area (sanding works well) as the paint can clog the pads. Not usually a problem but why take a chance? |
The downside with hightemp paint is that it will trap more heat into the rotor. This technique is not recommended for extreme usage unless you have really good cooling. Surface rust is not a huge problem outside the aesthetic downside. If you do paint them, tape up the inner vanes.

You're not the first one to complaint of the rust ring. There have been a few threads on the subject. Most tape up the rotor and use hi-temp paint. But the paint will peel and flake off with each washing. And you're back where you started from.

I used to have this problem when I had my 09' Z and it was annoying. Plus it makes the car look older. But I've had my 15' Nismo for almost 3 years and 30k miles and haven't run into that issue again. I'm thinking Nissan painted that inner ring. Whatever they did it seems to be working.

I'd just move to a very arid climate and never let that ring get wet :twocents:
|
Mine is covered in brake dust and it looks like it is painted a dark gun metal. :stirthepot:

Moderator, this should be moved to the BRAKE section of the forum. Cheers.

Could get a set of rotor caps and get some visual aspects at the same time:

Op, nothing you can do except get a rust-free rotor on your next set of rotors. Not worth worrying about since it's just a cosmetic issue.
I am running StopTech rotors on my Z which have a rust free coating, DBA and EBC both make rust-free versions as well |
should have done this before installing. Using blue painter tape, cover the breaking area. use naval jelly to remove the rust using steel wool. once the rust is gone clean the jelly off with a petroleum solvent and dry off the bear metal. Now choose a rustolium paint of you color choice and apply two coats. That should keep the rust from coming back.

Digging these wheels and your TE's would look good too! |
If you paint your rotor hats with a good quality high temperature rust proof paint they will not get surface rust on them. This is the first thing I would do before installing new rotors. Did you install better brake pads?
