Anyone using Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus?
Already noticing drop-off in traction with stock Bridgestone 050's at temps @ 60 degrees F. I was contemplating a set of PS2's and noticed Tire Rack's add for the All/Season Plus. Checked around on the E46 M3 forum and some were for and some against. Michelin has a 45,000 pro rated warranty which is a plus in my book. Some of the negatives were slight degradation in handling and @ 2 mpg loss in fuel economy according to what I read.

pilot a/s's are great tires for winter temps. i use them on my G....in fact, i put them on today. if you're driving in snow you should get snow tires. the pilots a/s wont do too well in snow.
you shouldn't be loosing too much grip from your RE050's at 60F. ive been driving my Z around 40F and the grip is still good. my S03's on the other hand, 45F was about the limit. |

Wheelspin in1st and 2nd
Thanks for your reply Kenchan, but I'm loosing traction in 1st when leaving quickly and even 2nd. It felt a little like hydroplaning; could feel the back end move around and the tires spin with no squeal. I have never had that happen with this car and just thought it was the cool temps. The tires have 8,900 miles on them with plenty of tread . I won't be driving it in the snow, but I would like to drive year round w/out buying another set of wheels.

i found Michellin Pilot Sport A/S PLus noisey as hell.
I put them 225/50 17 all around on my ex Altima Coupe. That was alot of noise. Becuase it was as 2.4 cyl and FWD i had no idea of its traction.

I ran the Michelin's on my Touring 7AT Z and hated them. Traction was ok, only marginally better at 285 rear than the stock 245 rears. Not to mention the problem I had with the interior tread blocks breaking off in huge chunks. In a word: DON'T

They were just reviewed in a recent C&D? I think and performed poorly in snow compared to 'regular' performance all season tires and the true winter tires. I can tell you this...having switched from my summer Bridgestones to Blizzak snow tires, the loss of dry traction is enormous. Even in 40F temps, the summer tires had better grip than the winter tires. Granted my winter tires are only 245 vs 275 for the summer tires. If you live somewhere where it snows, the A/S are just a complete compromise with worse dry traction and mediocre snow traction. My plan for next year is use the summer tires up until the very first snow fall or persistent freezing temps. Then switch to winter tires and endure the lame performance.

I put on a set a few weeks ago. I don't plan on driving in the snow with my Z, but wanted something for the colder temps. So far I think they provide good traction, but you can tell it is not a summer tire, at least not when new. Perhaps when the tread wears down thet will perform a little better. I did not experience an improvement in noise level, seems about the same.
I mentioned that I don't plan to drive in the snow, but was at a dinner party the weekend before thanksgiving and it snowed. Most was melting on the streets, but there were patches of snow (over 30 accidents reported that evening). I took backstreets and tested the tires with accelleration, side to side motions (both done carefully), and I really felt confident with these tires. I have the sport option so the limited slip probably helped some. I was actually quite impressed in the light snow conditions. I also drive a WRX with dedicated snows for comparison. The next morning I left the Z in the garage and rode my bicycle that has studded snow tires to work. Overall, i am happy with the pilot sport a/s. |

Thanks everyone!
Thanks to all that responded. I live in eastern North Carolina where the temps range from 95+ to down in the teens. I will not be driving the 370 in the snow. I have a Nissan Frontier which is my daily driver. I will more than likely be purchasing a set of Michelin PS2's when these tires are done, although the Hankooks were well reviewed in Car and Driver. At least I have some time to think it over. Again, I want to thank all that have replied.
