I've read a bit on this as I've just ordered some spacers for the rear. From what I've seen, front spacers may put more strain on suspension components but rear have less adverse affects. There seems to be some horror stories about 'spacers gone wrong' around the net, but overall it sounds like they're a rather benign addition. The most common issues are vibration or fender rubbing. One should be sure to check bolt torques at prudent intervals to avoid catastrophic events.
