Forgstar F14 Wheel Failure

I know this is a popular wheel for 370z owners so thought I'd share this.

My friend who's a nano engineer speculated, "The wheel could have had a some congregated defects in the lattice structure of the alloy that caused an amplified stress crack that propagated over time. Then if introduced to a large stress, the material defects agglomerate even more leading to crack propagation and subsequent plastic deformation. Very interesting to know the result of forgestar's failure analysis." imo be careful with your wheel selection. remember the oem 19" ray's are light forged, and safe. |

The crack is a systemic anomaly inherent to the programming of the Forgestar. Although the transport process has altered it's consciousness, it irrevocably remains cast not forged. Ergo, concordantly, vis-a-vis...I have no idea what I'm saying.

This issue has plagued Forgstars for years.
Doesn't happen often, But it does happen. You get what you pay for I guess. :ugh2: Thanks for the heads up post. |

Like Trips said, they are cast wheels, it can happen. I certainly wouldnŽt be swayed away from purchasing Forgestars by this. IŽd say their failure rate must be pretty low actually given the popularity of the wheel and the fact that IŽve only seen a few of these types of failure (this one being the worst). However, I wouldnŽt put them on a track.

Yikes...
The OEM Rays Sport/Nismo wheels are the best wheels available considering they are super light and consistently available for cheap on the forum. Almost all aftermarket options are a downgrade in performance anyway. And that is especially true if you're not spending at least $3-6K. |

I'd be interested to see the front of the rim - it looks like there wasn't much, if any, damage there. Hard to imagine an impact causing that kind of damage to the inside of the wheel and the barrel without also significantly damaging the face of the wheel. I guess they could have clipped the edge of a pothole or something.
Aesthetics are subjective. And very rarely do parts work for both aesthetics and performance - they are often contradicting unless you are spending money for high dollar parts (e.g. CF hood is going to weigh more than stock hood unless you pay the premium for dry carbon). So if you're changing the wheels for the looks, then performance shouldn't really come into play. Not much racing is done on showroom floors. And the offsets are not ideal, I agree. But it's hard to justify spending the thousands of dollars for wheels equal in quality in terms of performance just to correct the offset. Once again, performance shouldn't really come into consideration because parts made for aesthetic reasons will often have zero or even a negative impact on performance. |

honestly, I see like 3 bmws a week with cracked wheels. (our roads are the *****)
Those 335is with the 19" m wheels and a 255/30R19 runflats. Ive had one customer replace 3 of them at 1190$ a wheel. He was fed up with it so We put him into a replica BMW wheel and he hasn't had a issue since. lol Also, I highly doubt that wheel just let go under normal driving conditions. Something was hit etc pothole.. to cause a few cracks and take away from the structure. I don't care how crappy the wheel is, it wont just taco under normal driving conditions lol. |
