i ran the ZIII tires 245/40/18 and 275/35/18 on my 95 RX-7 w/ LS1 V8, with hard driving, road course, and drag strip put like 20,000 on the set over 6 years, even had to drive one winter on them when my DD broke down. Never had a single issue. Thats crazy yours fell apart like that.

It is pretty clear you ran those tires red hot. I have to believe that you couldn't tell that you were over driving them, if not only by the feel, but by the smell.

I am in no way saying that those tires are track worthy but you have some fault. What were your hot tire pressures immediately after pulling into the paddock? What were your cold tire pressures before going on track?

Kids...If you are driving street tires on a track and they start howling and losing grip you probably need to back it off a little. If you pull into the paddock and your tire is at 49 psi hot you may want to bleed some air out of it (10 to 15 psi to be exact).

Although I did not follow this rule in my wife's civic earlier this year. I had mounted dedicated snow tires on it but just could not help my self driving on some switchbacks in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I killed those perfectly good tires...

haha, that's true... i used to run tires too hot all the time.

I start 28 cold, 38ish hot on all 4 corners.

The photo posted above was after 400 miles of Track time.
They were over heated, fact. But doing so to a non r-comp causes the above results. I was semi-amused.

Any thoughts however on how to reduce the carnage on my tires, while keeping a good lap time?

Also... backing off a little from howling tires? I thought that was part of the fun? *scratches head
