What to use to remove sticky glue residue from wheel weights?

1 Attachment(s)
I was washing my car last night & I noticed that the tire shop left large chunks of glue or tape residue on my wheels after they removed the wheel weights.

What can I use to remove the glue or tape residue w/o harming my wheel barrels?

That looks more like your wheel weights fell off...

I think you can use goof off or WD40

Goo be gone should work. Maybe use a hair dryer to heat up the adhesive so it comes off easier.

When I worked at a body shop, we used a 3m eraser wheel on a drill to remove emblem adhesive and pinstripes off of paint without harming it. It works really well. You would probably have to remove the wheel to get to it with it though.

If there is any left after that, goo gone should take care of it.

That was my first impression but the other 3 wheels have them so I'm assuming this is not the case lol

That was my plan but just wanted to get some input just to be safe.

I like that. Never seen it.

Expensive though, but if it's easy to do, it's worth it on $4000 wheels since most shops use a wire brush and chisel

kenchan 03-03-2015 12:51 PM

rc car motor spray works very well for this. i use it all the time to remove weights with no marks no stains.

but you'll need to be careful not to remove the remaining tape on the weights you want to keep.

FairladyZ10PG 03-03-2015 12:53 PM

I will try the heat gun & goo gone stuff when I get home

Hopefully I won't need the other stuff that were mentioned

kenchan 03-03-2015 01:31 PM

u should buy a can of rc car motor spray anyway.. it's a great cleaner and should be part of your garage's arsenal.

remove tar and stains too from wheels and such.

^where would I find one? any retail stores?

janglez 03-03-2015 01:42 PM

i've removed adhesive off of things before by simply placing a piece of duct tape on the adhesive then pull off slowly... when i removed the duct tape it brought the adhesive with it

FairladyZ10PG 03-03-2015 01:52 PM

^maybe if I heat that sucker up with a heat gun for awhile but when I tried removing it with my finger last night there's no way duct tape is going to remove this thing

you'd be surprised... i removed the emblem adhesive with duct tape when i replaced the nissan emblems with z emblems... not a perfect science but worked pretty good... goo gone removed the small amount of sticky residue that was left

Fairlady, use WD-40 or goo-gone by dabbing it on and letting it sit for a few minutes and then use a hair dryer to heat it up some. It may take a little elbow grease but it should come off. Once it's off wipe clean then use a little wax on the area. You will be good as new.

kenchan 03-03-2015 02:36 PM

googone, wd40 is great for cleaning up paper backed adhesives where the paper tears off.

for mounting tape and residue, rc motor spray is the way to go. you'll not need to do any further cleaning.
just spray, wait a few moments, and just lift off. that's how easy it is.

ive tested these rc motor sprays on paint. no issue: EmeraldPlus, Dynamite MagnumForce are my current choices.

I used this two weeks ago. Let it soak for a while.

Your adhesive doesn't look that stuck on at all, you should be able to use a heat gun and aggitate it with a microfiber towel and it should come right off

If it's old adhesive then you can go with the more aggressive options that people are suggesting

I have one wheel that it's absolutely impossible to remove the residue from

I have my fingers crossed :(

Haven't had the time to remove the residue yet

I'll probably work on it tomorrow

FairladyZ10PG 03-08-2015 03:08 AM

Ok had some time to clean the wheels at last

Used heat gun at first and a dry microfiber towel...didn't work so well so I got a bottle

of goo gone and let it soak for about 5 mins then used microfiber towel to remove the

residue. Took 20 mins for all 4 wheels. Now good as new! :)

axmea? 03-08-2015 03:16 AM

Make sure your wheel cools down first before using anything.

FairladyZ10PG 03-08-2015 03:19 AM

^yessum, the car was sitting in the garage for 6 hours :)

kenchan 03-09-2015 10:55 AM

get that can of motorspray. it literally takes less than a minute to remove the weights.

spray, count to 5 or so, peel up.

FairladyZ10PG 03-09-2015 11:16 AM

^I was trying to but the hobby shop was already closed...

oh.. :ugh:

try amazon. pretty sure they sell the emerald performanceplus.

kenchan 03-09-2015 11:29 AM

btw, i can't remember if i tested CRC MAF cleaner on paint, but that stuff is pretty similar to rc motor spray. if you have something painted you dont need, try MAF spray to double check it does not damage the paint.

the electronics circuit spray wasnt the same. i tried that before and it left some kind of residue. :ugh2:
