Trying to clear up the "fan duty cycle" numbers

Ambient temps here are about 50-60 degrees for four months and 90 to 105 for the rest of the year. I don't track the car but do enjoy driving hard whenever I get the chance. I have the k&n intake, stillen headers plus cats, and full akropovitch system. I just installed the stillen gold series oil cooler kit. Ambient temps here are now 60 and it takes about 10 to 15 minutes for the car to reach 170 degrees. The needle then gradually climbs to about 205 degrees if I drive it hard but no higher. I have yet to fine tune with uprev and I am interested what to do about the fan duty cycle upgrade. The coolant temp has never gone above two dots below the middle. From what I have read the ecu starts backing off on timing when oil temp is above 230 and/or coolant is above 190; thanks to SouthArk370Z's post on intake temps. According to the following upgrade of the fan duty picture by uprev themselves the fan only kicks in at 55% from 192 degrees as opposed to the stock version at 214. Some questions
1. If I change the fan duty cycle how will it affect the car during the cold season, because I am sure it will help during summer. 2. To what extent does the fan affect the cooling of the oil? 3. Should the fan be adjusted to max before it reaches 190 (this is in conflict to the following diagram?) 4. How does the a/c come into play here? It also causes the fan to turn on. 5. Can anyone post examples of their "new settings?" 6. Should I adjust the fan settings at all if I don't track the car but may sit in traffic on very hot days? Since we have undersized radiators, I like to have mine @ 100% before 180 during the summer. It gets around 105-110f here during the summer.
In the winter, you can run stock settings (what's pictured there) or bump it up to 100% @ 190-200. If the fans come on too soon in the winter, the car might take longer than optimal to come up to temp. That can cause poor gas mileage and over a long time, even cause uneven wear or damage to the engine. I would just run one setting in summer and another in winter. Not hard to change and flash. |
Oh, and the A/C table just scales the fan speed with system pressure to override the coolant temp table if you're running the A/C, since it won't work without air being passed through the condenser.
And I don't think it's really that big of a deal either way, if you run the stock thermostat. The car won't even use the radiator until that starts to open at around 170 (fully open @ 187 on the North American cars). As far as how it affects oil temp.. in most oil cooler setups, the fans can draw some air through the core, but it kinda depends on how the cooler is installed. Mine is flush against the front of the radiator/condenser, so the fans have a direct effect on how well the cooler works. Others have a sizable gap between them so the effect is less pronounced. Coolant temp has little to no effect on engine oil temp after initial warmup, save for those with 2012+ cars equipped with the Water/Oil heat exchanger, the effects of which I can't comment on as I don't have it. |

I can't remember if you can edit the first column/row cell or not (0.0mph/0deg). I think you can?
If so, I'd run the attached table on my car. Right now I have a funky table because I want the car to warm up absolutely as fast as possible since it isn't being actively driven at all, so I just idle it. |
So you are saying to run your attached table? It's not your "funky one?"

Why (red circle) didn't you write 0 degrees? Why blue circle those specific speeds? Why green circle those percentages?Attachment 60348

Oh, and I didn't write 0 degrees because the ECU interpolates between values.
If you put 0 degrees, at 1 degree it will turn on the fan. This means that at basically any temp, your fans will be on. I would not personally want them on at all until the coolant temp was high enough to matter, that way when the engine swings up to the temp where the thermostat is opening, it might have some chance of maintaining that temp a little better than it would otherwise. Again, all arbitrary based off of my own observations, not science. |
So the ECU upgrade which shows zero temp and the stock fan duty cycle which shows zero temp means that the fans are always on? No way!
