Went to Uprev. Here's my results

Hey all. went to uprev in Austin on tuesday to get my car dyno tuned. the guys there were very friendly and really put in alot of time on my car (4 hours about). I have never had a stock baseline run so im sorry I cant compare to stock. my Z is a 2011 with 9200 miles and stillen gen 3 intake, kinetix hfc's, and top speed cat back exhaust with y pipe. it was 95+ degrees outside and if your from Texas you know how humid it is. So anyways the baseline run before the tune showed 298 whp. After all was said and done with the tune it showed a max output of 307 whp. I was told that the majority of the runs were in the 304-305 whp range. Regardless, i was very pleased. He said my car was initially running too lean due to the mods but that he adjusted everything and put the car where it needs to be. I really was happy with the results and i appreciate them taking their time to do things right. Sorry guys but I dont have copies of all the dyno charts, just the one with the 307 whp run but I dont have it scanned for the comp yet.

Congrats. Tweaking the AFR will smooth out the torque curve and give much better feel at lower RPM's. And don't pay too much attention to those numbers. They're not as important as some would have you believe. Did they eliminate the 2 rear oxygen sensor inputs? Did they raise the rev limit? Did they eliminate the speed limiter? How many maps did they install?

No they didnt eliminate the oxygen sensor inputs because they said it could be a give away if taken in for warrenty work. they put in 5 maps. tuned, stock, economy, valet, and anti-theft. the rev limiter and idle rpm were left stock but the top speed limiter was removed. the timing was advanced and he told me he made it run a bit richer just because it was so lean. he told me the car comes stock tuned for 87 octane but now after the tune it is tuned for 93 octane.
the tuner told me that he was able to get the best reads in the begining and thats when he was able to do the most adjustments. he said that towards the end, due to the crazy heat, he was having less luck getting the cars numbers to respond well to changes from the tune. he told me that if i add an oil cooler and come back when its cooler they can probably do even more for me. regardless, i thought that show of 9 whp increase was good. but i know that dyno numbers are relative...

thats what he said. he told me nissan does it that way to keep the car running "safe" in case someone puts 87 octane in it by mistake. he also told me that nissan tunes the cars down in general from the factory, again to keep he car "safe", and that that is why a tune is so beneficial.

Pure Bovine Scatology!

Go and grab your owner's manual. Have a look at the fuel requirement.

dont flame me guys. im not tuner. just what i was told by uprev...

6MT 07-22-2011 11:34 AM

Well, we're not really "flaming" you. AND, I don't think "uprev" is telling you that. I think the "tuner" is. He, she, or it doesn't know too much about these cars if they're telling you that these engines use 87 octane.

SATX370Z 07-22-2011 11:47 AM

The owner Jared is the guy who explained the whole deal to me before I took it in. Omar was assigned to the actual tune. I wish I knew more about how to do it but unfortunately I'm at the mercy of their knowledge. However, I can't remember who it was, Jared or Omar, who told me about the 87 octane deal but it was Jared who told me about how Nissan under-tunes (for lack of better term) the Z from the factory.

I know I'm not being flames yet :) just asking ahead of time lol

While I don't know if Nissan really does this, he def didn't say that the car "uses" 87 octane... I think he was just stating that it is detuned so that the car won't detonate if someone accidentally uses 87. Doesn't mean it will run well on 87, just means it won't put a hole in the block.

In the manual you can specifically see that it will take 87 in an emergency but they reco no more than half a tank so that you can dilute with 92-93 when you next get a chance.

:iagree: I think the tech meant the parameters were tweaked specifically to a higher octane fuel. This is so they can be more agressive with the tuning. This also means using the higher octane is no longer "recommended" it is required.

How do you switch between maps on your own? Curious...

oh interesting. Is that offered on all Uprev tunes? Curious because I have been talking with a local shop and just gathering as much info as I can to see if these guys know what they are doing or not...
