lightweight pulleys
I was wondering if anyone here has lightweight pulleys and/or a grounding kit installed in their Z? If so, did it void out the warranty and how much of a difference did it make?

From my research on this board, Pulley will net you around 5hp. It will void warranty if the pulley was found to be the cause of damage.

ive hear mixed reviews. some swear that this will offset the engine harmonics, while other say its not a big deal.
this is the only reason i am holding off on one. |

From the reading I've done to educate myself on lightweight pulleys, specifically for a VQ, there really isn't much of a disadvantage in installing one. Our motors are internally harmonically balanced, as almost every single V6 is these days. The damper on the OEM pulley only acts to lessen noise, and not vibration or harshness, or act as a weight balance.
And it wasn't until a wise man said the following words to me that it all made sense: "when you get a supercharger, dont you change that pulley?" That wise man knows who he is. And he's absolutely right. People are quick to bash them, but forget that same pulley design is also what will power a supercharger kit. |

Honestly in my opinion, 5 or so horsepower isn't worth even the slight chance of damaging something, or voiding the warranty. I would save the $$ from this and put it towards something else that will yield noticeable gains. Just my thoughts, good luck with whatever you decide

I don't know if this helps, but I got the Stillen UD pulley. It is to reduce the stress on the alternator by 20%percent I believe just check the website. It does have a little bit more quickness on the rpms though I see it more in 3rd I feel it wanting more and pushing over a "hill" as I'd like to think. This is just my own experience. I have talked to the dealership near me and they told me all that harmonic balance ******** and da da da. I talked to the dealership I bought it from he said no, it doesn't mess with your timing or anything it actually is a good modification and it will not void my warranty. When I brought my vehicle in for an oil change I talked to the guys at the dealership that said no on the install and these guys couldn't believe the boss said that. This is just my experience though make some phone calls and talk to other people. In in the end, it's your car and your money, if you can't afford to fix your car if a mod voids your warranty then I would advise you not to get in the racing business.

I've had a Stillen Lightweight Pulley (standard size) in my Z for a while and I do notice it revs a bit quicker.. Also, you can feel the difference when decelerating; engine feels "lighter"..
As of right now, I'm getting installed a UR lightweight alternator pulley as well.. I don't expect to feel any major difference from this mod though.. |
As many forum members will tell you, quality aftermarket pulley kits are very safe, will improve HP & TQ delivery, improve throttle response, and even increase MPG.

I have been running the NST set for awhile now and have no problems with vibrations or any other concerns addressed in this thread. Performance gains would be difficult to say, as I also replaced my exhaust, intakes and cats at the same time. The difference in mass of the stock pulley had to let the engine wind up faster though.
