I dont think they can,, The ECU still controls that? I could be wrong tho? I know we talked about it when I was tuned but do not remember if it was changed.

I don't know how much they can advance it safely on 91/93, but it can be changed.

UpRev lets you set the desired timing advance but the ECU gets the final say based on the current conditions. Basically advancing the timing in UpRev usually doesn't get you anything unless you are creating a tune for a high-octane.

this is a copy paste from an email Ive been exchanging with Jared (Uprev)

This has been an ongoing complaint about the VVEL engine controllers. They do VERY advanced knock control. The ignition tables are only a starting point, the ECU will monitor the knock sensors and run as much advance as it can run before it starts to hear pinging. The only place these tables are of any use on the VVEL engines is to smooth out the power and for forced induction so that you can give the ECU a safe starting point so it doesn't ping for the first few pulls every time you start the engine.

We did tests on the ignition tables early on and found that if you pulled 15 points out of the ignition table, the power and ignition would drop dramatically on the first run after the adjustment, but after a few consecutive runs the ECU would advance the ignition right up back to where it was before. This goes for NA and FI applications. It's going to run what it's going to run based off of the knock sensor feedback. You really can't force it to run more advance.

We are looking for parameters to adjust the knock sensitivity and gain and whatnot, but our developers are really backed up with development projects and I really have no idea when they're going to be able to dig back into the knock code on the VVEL ECUs.

Jared Ainsworth

========================¸

In the end trying to tune the ign timing wont give you much as the knock sensor wont like it , even if you don't hear a ping/knock with an knock headphone.

I did the same thing as what Uprev did by removing a bunch of timing , but the ign timing would go right back where it was originally no matter what.
you might gain a total of +2-3 advance on 91 octane but it wouldn't be stable if under some condition you get more.

soo we have to wait for Uprev to come out with some knock setting

Did you ever figure out why your car was pulling timing up top on the dyno Megan?

not yet ,,, but I saw the shell station where I usually go, got a new shipment of gas !
I hope this time its going to be a good batch !! since our winter is finish
I even installed back my HFC instead of my Test pipe to help removing some extra noise that the knock sensor would pick up.

I will be testing tomorrow but I have other issue with the car right now ...
I'm getting very annoyed by the car right now ,,, today I had a few light on (VDC , wheel slip , and SES at the same time )
I didn't had my laptop with me so I have no idea what code it was but all i know i was unable to rev more than 1500-2000rpm

I had to reset the ECU (I love my new battery switch!!!) nothing happened after.

OH and the throttle is sticking when i barely touch the pedal ,, sometime it will rev up to 4000 rpm by itself if I even touch it a little bit...

the voltage in the pedal is working correctly
both throttle body are working properly (voltage)
there is a procedure to do when you install new TB but the ECU seem to forget them after a little while and make the idle and low throttle input do something nobody would like to have.

MOTEC ?? plzzz!!!! help but I need $$ for that lol

Does Uprev give you access to Knock overlay tables, its there with Cobb AccessTuner Race. As per Cobb's documentation, you can tell the ecu to ignore the knock, but not sure if it works or not.

Confirmed with Cobb, knock overlay tables are functional.

They dropped the Z/G market to focus on the GTR and other cars.

That seems counter intuitive doesn't it? I mean aren't there 100 z/g cars to every one gtr...? why would a company go for a fraction of the client base and money?

it seems Cobb didn't want to continue on factory NA cars, more time and cost on R & D compared to FI cars.

Can anyone chime in on what a safe timing advances would be, I'm sure this would be related to to 350z/G35 timing tune or cars on FI.

i wish Cobb comes back as well and they were on the right track.
