can not just swap the ecu has to be programed for your car. When I first got my car they had to replace my ecu and they had to load it to the car based of my vin. When I asked the guy about it being plug and play he said no that it had to be loaded, when I asked him what if he didn't he said the car wouldn't start just crank over. I don't know the truth behind this because I am sure he never tried it but maybe in there manual it i says that.

That system is in place on almost all newer cars to prevent car theft. If a thief had a key programmed with a particular ECU, they could theoretically break into a car, install their ECU and drive away with the car.

At least I believe that is the reason...

i had to have my ECU replaced, and it would have been about 1300 CD if not for warranty. So i'm thinking even if it does work, there are better things to spend the money on for more power.

edit ; i doubt someone just swaped a Nismo Ecu into a normal 370z because its a bit more complicated than that
gonna have to correct you on that one, i know what each unit does and how and the vvel sub box has no control over the adjustment of the system. It is a driver box that powers the motors on the actuators and reads the sensor input from the back of the heads the interperets the angle and the amount power and polarity sent to the motors to maintain that angle or change it at the desired speed according to the requested signal the ecu sends. Of course it has a few more functions and several communication lines to the ecu but on the whole the vvel "tune" is stored in the ecu. A certain company has been a little lazy about releasing the tuning software for the vvel, so i started to talk to GTM and some things will be coming together in the future

i had an idea it was something like that but no one seem to have been able to confirm it. All I know is what I see in the service .pdf , it is first connected to the VVEL module then the ECM.

I'm not so sure the nismo has a more aggressive VVEL. From what i've seen, the nismos with full bolt-ons/tune and non-nismos with full bolt-ons/tune make nearly identical numbers (using the same local dyno).

I stand corrected -- thanks for clarifying!

it's cool but the main thing so far as the vvel tuning and gains goes is if the ecu is tunned to open the vvel to it's maximum angle or not, and at what degrees off cam timing it is allowed to do this. due to the nature of the beast on this one if the valves are open to far at the wrong time you may hit the piston so there is mechanical limitations to the amount of lift and timing that can be acheived.

I was afraid of that -- there must be some math that can be applied to figure out the maximum lift though, right?

Not saying I know what that is -- but I can't believe there isn't a way to make a good educated guess before tweaking things...

wow this VVEL thing is pretty serious, SO am guessing the best way to tackle this will have to be with an Adjustment and tunning?
