Normal to blow some flames?

Is it normal for my car to shoot some flames out of the exhaust on a cold night here in NY?

Car was fully warmed up, on my way home from the movies I gassed my car from second to third and my buddy called me ( who has an evo 9 mr ) and said I just blew flames bigger than his car does out both exhausts...

I was able to do it again the next time I gassed the car and shifted towards reline..

it was about 35 degrees..

Normal?

phelan 12-24-2010 01:18 AM

....no?

djpathfinder 12-24-2010 01:44 AM

I've also seen someone else with test pipes and CBE to throw some flames too.

fullmonty 12-24-2010 08:22 AM

Ya dude, unless you have flame throwers, no its not normal. You sure your friend isn't B.Sing you?

Q8y_drifter 12-24-2010 08:53 AM

If your AFR is rich enough at redline then it's possible. The lack of cats is also a factor.

^those are his tail lights. I don't see any flames.

LOL look at the exhaust when he shifts. There's a small blue backfire. I'm assuming that's what the OP was talking about?

JMac88 12-24-2010 09:36 AM

I had that problem for a bit too. My car was running really rich when i put my test pipes till the ECU leaned itself out. Nothing to really worry about unless your AFRs are showing abnormally rich.

edit* just noticed your tunned. Your tunner may have programmed the ECU a little rich to have a "safer" tune depending on timing ect...

djpathfinder 12-24-2010 10:47 AM

Glad you chimed in JMac...I was referring to your car.

chuckd05 12-24-2010 11:48 AM

Def was doing it and on multiple occasions.

I'm tuned. Been tuned for a while I will go in and do a dyne pull and have them clean up the afr. My girl met us there and she was behind too and she also saw it. When I got home she asked if my car was Going to blow up ? Lmao

I thought it seemed a bit strange. And the way the described them is that it wasnt just a small spark either ...

Interesting to say the least...

TBOX 12-24-2010 12:20 PM

tuned cars are tricky up here. The drastic weather changes can throw you from lean to rich in no time. My old WRX used to shoot enough flames that it left my bumber charred.

But anyhow, you're running rich enough that detonation of extra fuel is occuring in your exhaust.

chuckd05 12-24-2010 10:38 PM

Good point tbox, thing Is my car was tuned last winter

chuckd05 12-30-2010 03:27 PM

Went to my shop today ( UpRev Tuners ) Performance MotorSports in Smithtown, NY ... they datalogged it and fixed some correction factors but nothing seemed all that out of whack... i saw the datalogging charts and a/f looked good on accell and decell... I was at 12 ish at redline....

Come spring I will get back on the dyno for a little tweaking and we are going to make a track map with a more aggressive tune with a touch higher redline...

As always the guys at that shop were extremely helpful... I will experiement again though with someone video taping one of these nights to see if its still doing it but the car will not be driven all that much until spring so I am not worrying about it. Once they tweak the tune a bit Im sure all will be well...

RCZ 12-30-2010 03:51 PM

only if by normal you mean awesome.

nogoodname 12-30-2010 03:54 PM

oOoOoOo.... a little after fire!

destinyZ 12-30-2010 06:49 PM

Mine will shoot a little smoke at red sometimes when I push it but other then that no one has said anything about a flame. Like mentioned before maybe its just the TP's?...

Vegitto-kun 12-30-2010 06:54 PM

you should be happy

flames are awesome.

red6spd 12-30-2010 07:35 PM

I wanna shoot flames!!!!!!!!!!! LOL

chuckd05 12-30-2010 09:32 PM

lmao . The kid in the evo who saw it owns a barber shop and a lot of my friends go there and people keep asking me about my car and its "flame shooting"

BUT after looking back at my old charts it seems it used to run at about 13 towards redline... now its down around 12... so it is more rich... im not going to worry about it until spring though...

if anyone with tuning knowledge can chime in on the ideal a/f for our cars id appreciate it.. I think I may buy the cipher cable and get some date and start trying to learn to make sense of it.

damn, you must be right, didnt even think of that ... the car is stoked to have some traction in the cold so its shooting flames out to celebrate... cant believe I didnt put 2 and 2 together. :bowrofl:

TBOX 01-01-2011 12:12 PM

You don't have a sport do u?
I considered it might be the synchro rev but then I seemed to recall you having a base.

Junior370z 01-01-2011 01:12 PM

Bust out the marshmallows dude! Flames out the tail pipes are awesome!

Oh and the flames are just unburnt fuel burning up in your exhaust from running a little rich. A common occurrence on modified cars.

Flat foot shifting on boost with high timing advance maybe... lol

Other way around... retard the timing and it'll cause flames.

Staples 01-19-2011 11:57 PM

My cars shoots flames at times too. It depends on how restrictive your exhaust is and what kind of timing is in the tune. It's not all about air/fuel ratios.

xsnapshot 01-21-2011 11:01 AM

I'm pretty sure this is normal. And IIRC it's cause, is injector over-run.

There is a small delay between when you let off the gas, and when the injectors and spark plugs stop firing. I believe this is implemented from the factory to keep there from being a sudden slamming deceleration sensation when you lift off the throttle.

Since the throttle plate is closed, and very little air is moving through the system, the combustion is delayed and winds up moving far enough back in the exhaust system to see flames (on de-catted, high flow exhausts).

This has nothing to do with timing advance or the air fuel ratio you run while WOT. It is common on WRX/STI's and happens to me all the time.

Rally cars sometimes incorporate injector overrun to function as anti-lag. (there are other methods of antilag as well). When they lift off the throttle, the injectors and sparkplugs continue to fire for quite a while, and the expanding fireballs will keep the turbo spinning.

Depends how much fuel you are dumping... E85 22Psi at redline with a TMIC and stock BOV, 33 degs advance, FFS always had flames  ferking great sound too

Using launch control at 10 PSI was sweet too lol

bullitt5897 01-21-2011 12:14 PM

Flames is normal and awesome!!! I had them with my s2000 and turbo back 3" exhaust on a N/A motor!!! freaking sweet sound and huge flames. what happens is the hot unburnt gas ignites when it reaches the significantly cooler air toward the end of your exhaust. I always joked with my buddies if they tailgated me at a red light I would melt their bumpers  I have some pics of a Supra at lil tally that I took and it was throwing out 3ft flames!!! it was EPIC!!!

NYBladeZ 01-21-2011 12:33 PM

I want to shoot flames :(

Solus 01-24-2011 05:29 AM

The weather here is stupid in the winter and goes from 60 degree highs to 30 degree highs in one day and I shoot flames quite a bit when it gets cold all of sudden... i wouldn't say its all that abnormal
