Normal to blow some flames?

Is it normal for my car to shoot some flames out of the exhaust on a cold night here in NY?

Car was fully warmed up, on my way home from the movies I gassed my car from second to third and my buddy called me ( who has an evo 9 mr ) and said I just blew flames bigger than his car does out both exhausts...

I was able to do it again the next time I gassed the car and shifted towards reline..

it was about 35 degrees..

Normal?

....no?

I've also seen someone else with test pipes and CBE to throw some flames too.

Ya dude, unless you have flame throwers, no its not normal. You sure your friend isn't B.Sing you?

If your AFR is rich enough at redline then it's possible. The lack of cats is also a factor.

LOL look at the exhaust when he shifts. There's a small blue backfire. I'm assuming that's what the OP was talking about?

I had that problem for a bit too. My car was running really rich when i put my test pipes till the ECU leaned itself out. Nothing to really worry about unless your AFRs are showing abnormally rich.

edit* just noticed your tunned. Your tunner may have programmed the ECU a little rich to have a "safer" tune depending on timing ect...

Glad you chimed in JMac...I was referring to your car.

Def was doing it and on multiple occasions.

I'm tuned. Been tuned for a while I will go in and do a dyne pull and have them clean up the afr. My girl met us there and she was behind too and she also saw it. When I got home she asked if my car was Going to blow up ? Lmao

I thought it seemed a bit strange. And the way the described them is that it wasnt just a small spark either ...

Interesting to say the least...

tuned cars are tricky up here. The drastic weather changes can throw you from lean to rich in no time. My old WRX used to shoot enough flames that it left my bumber charred.

But anyhow, you're running rich enough that detonation of extra fuel is occuring in your exhaust.

Good point tbox, thing Is my car was tuned last winter

Went to my shop today ( UpRev Tuners ) Performance MotorSports in Smithtown, NY ... they datalogged it and fixed some correction factors but nothing seemed all that out of whack... i saw the datalogging charts and a/f looked good on accell and decell... I was at 12 ish at redline....

Come spring I will get back on the dyno for a little tweaking and we are going to make a track map with a more aggressive tune with a touch higher redline...

As always the guys at that shop were extremely helpful... I will experiement again though with someone video taping one of these nights to see if its still doing it but the car will not be driven all that much until spring so I am not worrying about it. Once they tweak the tune a bit Im sure all will be well...
