Is it normal for my car to shoot some flames out of the exhaust on a cold night here in NY? Car was fully warmed up, on my way home

Is it normal for my car to shoot some flames out of the exhaust on a cold night here in NY? Car was fully warmed up, on my way home from the movies I gassed my car from second to third and my buddy called me ( who has an evo 9 mr ) and said I just blew flames bigger than his car does out both exhausts... I was able to do it again the next time I gassed the car and shifted towards reline.. it was about 35 degrees..
