Oil filter
I use the K&N! What are you using?
K&N Oil Filters - Oil Filters for Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles, ATV's, Boats, and more! |
Oem, oem, oem. :)
|
Anyone know if the OEM oil filter part#? Is it the same as what they were using for the 350z?
|
Ive always used oem.
I'll usually pick up a few at one time from the dealership, that way im not having to go back everytime I do a change. |
I've never had issues with Fram. But I'm used to LS1s. Never had a VQ motor before.

And if you like K&N oil filters, you might as well save a few bucks and use a Mobil1 oil filter. They are the same exact filter, except for the nut welded on the back of the K&N. |
i started using k&n oil filters on my mach simply because its such a pain to remove stock filters. with the k&n's i use a socket and ratchet wich makes it so much easier and quicker to do oil changes.
i'll stick with k&n on the fairlady as well... |
K&N part # HP-1008. So says the interwebs.
I bought the filter and a case of Castrol Edge but, right before I put her up the lift I remembered my sales agent said the first change was on him. So I took it in and let Nissan do the work. So the next change I will be switching to full synthetic and a K&N filter. Sidebar: Has anyone ever heard that you should change your oil filter every second oil change? |

Talked to one of my friends who used to change the oil at that same dealership and he said that it was probably like 1 in every 20-30 cars they'd actually change the oil filter. I said "WTF WAS I PAYING FOR THEN!?" I know they're cheap, but that's total bullsh!t!!! I had that car a LONG time. I can't believe it ran on the same oil filter for 4 years. (It was an 2002 and I didn't start changing my own oil until 2006.) |

I typically use Mobil1, but I do like K&N. However, I do love to cut open oil filters to see what is happening in my engines.
It will be interesting to learn whether this engine can be drained using an oil evacuator as I prefer using them to other methods since they drain more oil. Any time I remove a drain plug I always replace the washer, AND I always use a properly calibrated torque wrench to put the drain plug back in—I never used any air tools on a drain plug; not even to remove it. |

^ Used is a very subjective term. It's is technically used the second you turn the ignition over.
It's not $8 for a K&N its about $14 just to be clear. I often let my Mazdaspeed6 go two changes before changing the filter because it was a cartridge type and a PITA to change. If a piece of metal is lodged in your filter theoritically it will stay there. But more importantly if you have a piece of metal in your filter your engine is coming apart somewhere. |

Important point is change your oil filter with every oil change .. period. |
WIX are one of the cheapest filters you can get that is built well. Same manufacture that makes the Pure 1, M1, K&N filters.
|
I shop at AutoZone, or Advanced Auto Parts. And I bought the filter less than a week ago for $13.97. YOU ARE WRONG. I also checked a few internet sites (which don't do you any good on a sunday afternoon) most are over $14. Once again YOU ARE WRONG!
|
^^^ Yeah, what the hell happened? I just looked up the K&N oil filter on Autozone.com and it was like $25! That's outrageous!
|
List is $25, typical purchase price $14-17 and the good deal if you can find it is $8.97. But like I said $8.97 makes no difference if you have to pay $5 for shipping a wait a week for it. I would rather pay the 14 up front and get it when I need it.
|
I could have sworn the last filter I bought was dirt cheap. I should have bought a crap load of them when Big K was going out of business.

K&N air filters are a waste of money IMO. They're more restrictive than paper filters. All of our dynos were worse by nearly 1HP at the wheels with K&N air filters.
They say on the box "For off-road use only." I know a lot of them say that, but I agree with them. The only time I'll use one is if I'm going back to the dry lake bed racing. |

1 hp? LOL!!!!!! You do know that there can be anywhere between 2-5 hp variance between dyno pulls right? K&N's are good, they DO give a little more airflow and you don't have to replace them just clean them. A tuned car with K&N drop ins gains 5-6 hp from just the filters. Not bad. |
^^ Just saying I've seen otherwise. I used to use K&Ns all the time. My Formula had one and my Trans Am had one for about 2 years. I switch back to paper and my 1/4 times were just less than 5/100th (if even that) slower, but they were more consistent.
I'll see if I can find my time slips. |
