Sorry for the DUMB tuning question
I just have no clue what tuning does. Do I have to get it done after new parts are put on...or is it to see how much power you put out...or to add power?!! I've never done this and don't know crap about it; just know people always talk about it
Any information would help, Thanks |

Basically it optimizes the air fuel ratio and ignition timing for your particular car. When you add an intake or an exhaust it can change the A/F ratio and a tune from Uprev or Cobb isn't a bad idea. However results from the tune can vary greatly.

With that in mind, I would only recommend you tuning your car AFTER you have done some intake and exhaust mods as these will change your A/F ratio.

And Slowphia, remember this: The more power you make, the more gasoline you burn. But it sure is more fun getting there.

Honestly by looking at your sign, I would save my money and don't get a tune yet. Your mods seem within the capability of your stock tune and you might be able to get a couple of extra horses, but I doubt you'll notice the difference.
But I don't think you're currently at risk of running to lean and damaging your engine. Maybe some people that have gotten a tune with the basic bolt ons can chime in, but I doubt they can post any big gains. You're better of spending your money elsewhere. If you really want it, you could buy a Cobb AP and hope they break VVL.

Hold up, I think what they are really forgetting to mention is getting a tune will 100% void your warranty. Not void like oh there's a intake installed but its not the cause so we will honor your warranty. I'm talking, "oh your ECU has been tuned, your warranty is voided--sorry".
A tune is basically taking the computer of your car and reprogramming it to getting the most HP. I guess you could compare it to over clocking a computer, although you are not really overclocking just optimizing. The first thing that happens when you take your car to nissan for a problem is they plug in to the ECU to see if any problems have been logged. Before that happens a checksum is done on the ecu to determine if anything has been reprogrammed. If they determine it is reprogrammed you will pretty much be out of luck for warranty work on most engine related problems. |

I am getting my Z cobb tuned next Thursday @ Altered Atmospher. Its running me 400$ (plus i paid 500 for the Cobb AP). I should get about 7-10 peak hp gain but will also gain a fair amount of mid range tq which is really what i am want.

When you buy a well built car...the warranty is less important (IMO)

Nope...ecu's don't work like that. When you are installing the Cobb, it will take a snap shot of your ECU rom. When you uninstall the Cobb, it will place that snap shot back on. Takes about 20 min to uninstall
