Real HP / Torque numbers I can expect with E-Tune
 
Good morning all,

I have been reading much info here on the forum but am still seeking some real and honest information to a few questions I have been considering an E-Tune. Where I live there are no "tuners" and if there were I doubt I would have much faith in their abilities. So a dyno tune is not an option.

I own a 2010 370Z with 7 speed AT - current mileage 53,000. The only mods to the car is a full Stillen Gen 3 Intake / exhaust system. It includes CAI with K&N air filters, High Flow Catalytic converters, Stillen exhaust all the way back to the tail pipes. It is stock other than that and there will not be any future mods made. When I purchased the car this was already installed so I don't know what it was like before installation. The only thing I have added is a Sprint Booster V3. I completely understand there is no HP gains and that its only function is to improve throttle response. Opinions vary with this item but I really like it. The fuel available is 93 Octane.

I'm on the younger side of 56 yrs old so I don't want to shoot flames out of my tail pipes. (It happens often enough with me when I eat spicy foods anyway) :roflpuke2: I won't use launch control so I don't care if it's available. I'll never race the car. I do enjoy some spirited driving from time to time on my E. TN mountain roads. Reliability is key as I have no desire to make any mechanical adjustments that would encourage future issues. However, with all of this said, I would like for the car to do all it is capable of normally aspirated.

I've read here on the forum Seb @ Specialty Z and Z 1 are both top notch. I emailed Seb a few days ago but have not received a response yet. I'm sure they're busy.

What kind of realistic HP gains can I expect from an E-Tune? Torque gains?

Cost?

Is a Tune really that noticeable? Is it worth the cost considering the Stillen intake / exhaust system installed in my car?

Any info and constructive opinions are appreciated. Thanks, Eric

Especially with the earlier model Z's, the ability of the ECU to compensate for mods and "self learn" was more limited. You will see a generous boost to HP and TQ, and although the sprint booster will take some of the surprise out of the better pedal response, you should feel a substantial improvement in the mid range. Beyond that, with the mods you've got, you really should optimize your AFRs for the sake of your engine.

Apparently you have been using the site's search "feature" which, IMNSHO, sucks. Go to any of the major search engines and add "site:the370z.com" to your search string. This will limit results to the site given and produce much better results.

The rule of thumb is: if only intake mods or only exhaust mods are made, the ECM can adjust itself; if intake and exhaust mods are made, you should get a tune. As stated above, your AFRs may be off.

Any good tuner can remap the throttle response in the ECM which will do even better than the SprintBooster as the tune eliminates some of the delay in the ECM.

Your tuner should be able to handle that with no problem. You can even get switchable maps for different octanes and other factors.

Then a remote tune should suit you just fine. You only need a dyno tune to eke out the last few HPs.

I haven't had any dealing with either one, but they both get great reviews on this site.

Going by what I've read on this site, it is very noticeable and I don't remember reading about anyone that didn't think it was worth it. As per above, you need the tune because of your mods.

Edit: Don't worry so much about the HP/TQ numbers. All the reports I've read from people that had their cars tuned (even those that got remote tunes) say that the car is more enjoyable to drive. And that's what it's all about. :)

Also, Does anyone have experience with the tuner at AdminTuning in Houston, TX. He appears knowledgeable in the Youtube videos about E tuning. Thanks

I'm not currently tuned, however my choice would be to go with Specialty Z, Z1, or SOHO before I would think about AdminTuning.

Let me put it this way: Of the four tuners / shops I listed above, only three have posted and shared information on this forum.

You can expect 285 hp and 235 torque on a dynojet with a etune.

Plan on $800-$1000 depending on the tuner.

Thanks for the link Option. Interesting read to say the least. I think that answers the Admin question. While I appreciate him trying to absolutely everything possible from his tunes I don't want to do it at the possible expense of a motor.

I heard back from Seb at Specialty Z, as everyone has stated he was very patient and helpful in answering my numerous questions. I inquired about HP gains and torque, his reply was very interesting and reflected a person with a great deal of experience. It depends on the health of the engine, fuel quality and mods to the car at the time of the tune. "Health of the engine", I would have never thought of things in that manner. He did say he typically sees 10 - 20 HP gains so obviously if a tune is done it is to improve the overall performance of the car as much as HP / Torque gains. The last question I asked was which Tune he recommended; Off The Shelf or Data Log? Considering the current mods on my car, no future mods will be done and the car will never see track time he replied the OTS tune would work just fine in my situation. Even with an OTS tune he still reviews the results and tweaks it a bit. OTS cost is $650. I hope this helps someone in the future. Thanks
