HKS EVC VI boost controller any good?
hey I'm wondering what your thoughts are on the HKS EVC VI boost controller would be beneficial for my aam tt setup? my tuner said it would be better to have but I'm hearing that it isn't really needed with my ecutek tune..is this something that I should invest in?

I have a Blitz boost controller and I recently got a re-tune and we decided to run the boost through EcuTek and just use the boost controller as a boost gauge. My tuner is Sebastian at SpecialtyZ an he said by using EcuTek he could dial the car and the boost in better. But he is a guru with EcuTek your tuner may not be a comfortable and knowledgeable as Seb is with EcuTek.

From all the reading I've done, apparently the HKS unit does a really good job, but is a major pain in the *** to install and set up.

Assuming the Ecutek boost control is up to snuff, I would go with it... I would assume better integration with multiple maps, etc. (I am speculating here as I do not have Ecutek boost control, but plan to go with it when I upgrade for E85).

The one knock I've heard on using Ecutek for boost control was that it didn't respond as quickly as an actual boost controller. I think it was VitViper that brought it up.

I think for some people who plan on setting-and-forgetting a certain boost level and just want maximum spool - a cheap manual boost controller is a great option that often goes overlooked. They can be had for <$20 and are close to idiot proof for installation. I would go with this option (actually have one sitting on the shelf) but I didn't have the fuel to support using it when I did my original tune, and when I upgrade I want tuned boost maps individually set by gear. Hopefully Ecutek supports this.

That's what I did. Cheapo TurboXS MBC. I've got a Greddy EBC in a box on the shelf, but I've had no complaints so far. I just want more.

Sometimes I think if all of us boosted guys on here pooled their shelf-parts, we'd be able to do a complete build.

ECUTek / ECU based boost control in my experience from the user stand point has always been superior to a third party / separate control unit. as long as your tuner knows what he is doing the ECUTEK boost control function will be superior than the HKS unit.

To Chuck's point, I also had read of this (see below). The opinion is that the frequency signal from the solenoid valve apparently isn't as strong as it could be to accurately produce a reasonable wastegate reaction time so it would be delayed compared to an EBC. Interestingly enough, I have been talking with Tony @ FI as of late and just brought this up as a talking point a few days ago with him since I had been interested in the integrated boost control from ECUTek. He basically shot the idea down and proceeded to tell me that at the SEMA show, Sebastian at SZ learned that ECUTek has figured out their software to the point where the Z should be able to utilize this feature as the GTR is able to (ECU differences) and he feels comfortable moving forward with it.
Until this, Tony said they have been using 4 maps as hjo1078 says below. 91 or 93 map, E10-E30, E30-E50, and E50+ so to a point you still have to monitor what tune you are running based on fuel in the tank. Now, it sounds like this won't be necessary with the new software that ECUTek has. You could still do the 4 maps if you wanted so you're not always running high boost I suppose. Just the messenger here and know enough to be dangerous on this so don't shoot me! Hopefully we can get further info on this. Quote:
