Tires 2015 AutoX season
 

I'm planning on running 275 all around for next season and had decided on Hankook R-S3's. As of today Tire Rack is not showing 275/35/18 listed for the R-S3's (it was listed, just out of stock a week ago). I'm sure there will be some available before March but wanted to have a back up plan. I've been running Bridgestone Re-11's so I know how they work but was wanting opinions on Dunlop Direzza ZII and BFG g-Force Rival. Both of these are available in the size I'm looking for.

Reviews for either of these?

Posted here because I was wanting real world experience with the 370. A tire that works well on a Miata may not be that great on our cars, so reviews on other sights may not be that accurate.

Fair enough... but so long as the same test car, track, and driver is used, and road conditions are controlled for, the data are more stable and therefore more interpretable... and empirical data > personal anecdotes.

GRM is also pretty good about testing and looking at hard data.

That said, no harm in comparing and contrasting anecdotal findings vs. reasonably controlled testing :tup:

I'll give high marks to the RE-11's, FWIW.

Here in Australia, I have found the Direzza II to be superior to the RS3 but only by a small margin. That said, this was before I went square (running 245/40R18 fronts and 275/35R18 rears in both tyres).

I now run 265/35R18 A048 Yokis (full R-Spec, but new "old stock" as they were superceded 2 years ago by the A050) on 9.5 Enkei's which are clearly superior to both.

I can only translate into equivalent laptimes at Philip Island GP circuit where the RS3 is a baseline at 1m54, the Direzza is worth 1.2s per lap and the Yoki's are 3.5s/lap over the RS3.

I am not sure about ambient temps in your area, nor the grip level afforded by the asphalt. Most of our track running is done in high teens Celsius unless it is Feb/Mar or Nov/Dec when it can be high 20's or even more and my comparative times were set in our Autumn. Note that PI GP circuit is a very absrasive surface and we need to be very careful with camber to avoid blistering the inside edge of RH tyres because of the number of very high speed LH turns. The Direzza seems to be better able to absorb the abrasive nature of the track than to RS3 which goes off by the time you get to T12 on the 3rd lap whereas that is when the Direzza really comes on and stays gripped up for up to 6 laps.

I have no experience of the RE11 as they are not available here.

Why not just run the 285/35/18 square for the RS3's? Thats what I ran on mine. I'm on Re-11's now and the RS3's are definitely stickier but if you plan on driving daily on these then the RE-11's are more comfortable with more road noise but I wish I had gone with these RS3's for this set as the noise/comfort thing doesnt bother me. The nice thing about the RE-11's is they have a more progressive break away at the limit and the squeal. The RS3's not quite as much in either category.

Are you on stock wheels? I'll be in street class so I was a little worried about running a 285 on the 9" front wheel. Will not be for daily, I've got a second set for daily.

For our cars the RS3v2 (200TW version) is probably the best bet. 285 is probably ok, you'll just need to run fairly high pressures, as I'm assuming you're running Street with stock front camber.
BFG is due to release a new Rival before the April deadline, which might be a contender also.
The latest Dunlop has a better feel and sidewall but its heat handling for our heavy pig cars is a problem.

Unless the new Direzza star spec comes in a bigger 19" size soon. But it comes in the size you want for 18" so you may want to consider that. The Direzza star spec historically has been arguably the street tire to have for Auto-X.

Put a email in this morning to get the ball rolling on a set of 18" Forgestar F14's with offsets to fit within the street class rules with R-S3's V2 285/35/18 all around. My Koni's came in last Thursday, so that should just about have me ready for B-Street in 2015 :driving:

I am running the Hankook R-S3 285's square. Great tire. Can't beat it for the price. I was interested in the Rivals as well but didn't hear alot of feedback from those in the Z community. Most run the R-S3's.

+1 for Martin82 and Corner3 Garage. They hooked me up over this past year on parts.

I'll go ahead and add a vote for the RS3s. I only have them in the rear (version 1) for now (getting fronts soon) and they grip beautifully WHEN WARM.

I had a little off because I got on the throttle too early when they were still cold (duh).

I'm probably the one that told you that Guy... That's because when I emailed Forgestar they told me that the biggest most offset the could go on the fronts was +35 for our car, which isn't enough. However, at nationals there was a guy that ordered them with +40/41 and they fit just fine, so they apparently do fit.
