Quick question for those with cages

For the attachment of the floor plates of the main hoop, did the builder insist on dropping the fuel tank?

Thanks in advance!

C'mon guys need your input and any pics you can give me asap... My builder is trying to say he needs to drop the fuel tank to weld in the floor plates and I know this is BS.

Your builder is probably playing it safe by removing the tank. I'm sure one of the caged guys will chime in.

Playing it safe for his pocketbook maybe.

It'll add 5-6 hours of labor @ over $100 an hour to do a step that isn't necessary.

If he insists, I'll tell him to stop working on it and take it to someone who isn't trying to gouge an extra $500-600 out of me.

It's already over budget and way past the date it was supposed to be done.

All car projects are like this, but I've not bitched even once about how long it's taking (to him) or even the added cost which is now over $400 more than my original quote. I'll not tolerate any more.

I have never heard of them dropping the tank for a cage before. Thats fine if they want to do it, but that should have been in the original quote.

Why is it BS? You haven't explained fully the reason why he needs to drop the tank. Is it because he thinks the heat will hurt the tank? Is any welding done on the outside of the car? Is the main hoop getting mounted to the floor or the shelf? Is he cutting a hole? Is he boxing the floor plates?

He's just welding the floor plates to the floor on either side of the gas tank, directly behind the mid member.

Here's a photo, he's welding in the indicated areas, well to the left and right of the fuel tank.

I think his apprehension was mostly because he thought the fuel tank was made of plastic... I've spoken with him since I sent photos of the tank outside the car as well as with it cut open so you can see the material under the protective coating. Seems like he's gonna go for it without dropping the tank.

No reason the tank should be removed IMO.

Sh0velMan 08-02-2013 10:21 PM

Yeah he got over it and welded it in without dropping the tank, thank God.

Thanks for the info guys!
