Another possible reason is that there is a 'no-lift-shift' lock out solenoid on second gear gate for 1st to 2nd shifts. This could be to protect the clutch. I know that on many cars, the manufacturers try to prevent people from power shifting. Some back off the throttle. I can see a gate lock out like they do with CAGS on T56 transmissions.
