Questions about tracking a base

So I've decided to track my car but I have a couple of questions regarding the sad fact that I have a base model. I have an oil cooler and I'm ordering a set or continentals for the track. But as far as brakes go, is there a cheaper alternative to upgrading to the sport brakes? And is there anything else I need to track the car?

Better brake fluid for sure

Better pads and rotors will make a WORLD of difference too!

Is fluid the only thing I have to worry about as far as safety is concerned? Pads were obvious lol I forgot to put that in.

Fluid will be a huge factor, you can get many things to "improve" breaking


Again, better pads, better slotted or driller rotors will help a lot with bite and you can get Titanium shims for behind the pads so they deflect heat...


There isn't much.. Or anything else you COULD do

Z1 offers an upgrade package for the non-sport brakes. Don't quite remember the brands of anything, but I believe it came with rotors, brake lines, fluid and pads. Can anyone chime in experiences with that kit?

At that point by the way, your tires will make a huge difference too

Brakes slow the car down, slam on them or press them hard enough, they lock up, rendering brake upgrades a waste of money

Many people do not understand this. I can lock my wheels in .2 seconds, what is slowing me down at that point? How sticky my tires are.

Oh brake ducting kit, that would be beneficial


Also, warm your pads and rotors up, don't let them cool and track it like a mad man

steel brake lines will make a huge difference along with the high temp fluid. You will cook the fluid if you are tracking hard and the rubber lines will heat up and expand.

Next you can use stock pads but they will not last you more than 2 days. Upgrade to some decent pads. I like endless pads.

new 2 piece rotors are nice but obviously more money.

At the very least do the ,lines/fluid and make sure you go with plenty of pad.I go with an extra set as back up.

Note : this is only from my experience. Im sure there are other people that have much more info than me.

First time ever tracking? You don't need a lot then. Upgrade the fluid and the oil cooler and you will be fine. At least if you are going with a reputable group like PCA or BMW with instructors who actually know what they are doing. After the first time, and you get faster, then all the other upgrades will be necessary, but as a first time track outing, you won't be pushing it near the limits.
