phunk's road race fuel pump install

Well, I finally got the fuel pump installed. Instead of going into details about the install. I took alot of pictures for you guys. :pics: If you have any questions about it, please ask. If you are planning on doing this yourself. Give yourself a good day to do it. I took 3 days working on it part time. Read the instructions twice. Then read them again as you are going through each step. Write down you meter reading when you check the fuel level sender on the driver side. You will need this when you double check the sender after you have installed the pump. To make it easier. Remove everything inside the car. seats and panels. give yourself all the room you need. Soon as you remove the pass side pump and driver side sending unit. remove the o-rings and wipe them off. Seems like they don't like gas and air combination on them. They like to swell up if you don't wipe them dry. Get yourself a small camera and take pictures of inside the tank. So you know what it looks like. This makes it easier for when you are working in there.

Thanks for sharing, Rusty. If you have any suggestions to improvements or changes to the installation components or procedure let me know!

More pic's 6. :D There is a couple of pictures that should be here that I will not post out of respect for phunk's hard work on this.

Here, you have to write down your readings from the meter so you DON'T forget them later. This is for the sending unit on the driver side that you have to install back on phunk's fuel pump.

To get the main power wire up to the battery. I used a cut off coat hanger and pushed in down from the top of the main wiring harness hole. Once down through. I taped the main power wire to the hanger and pulled it back up. I don't have a picture, but I mounted the 30amp breaker on the fire wall behind that main wiring harness hole on the flat section. Just to the left of it.

Number the pages on the instructions. LOL So the one page you're looking for is not in the back of the last section after you print them out. That's the one that bit me on the siphon hose. And what I mentioned about the sending unit mounting area.

phunk 11-28-2012 01:08 AM

Honestly I was looking for a setting in Word that put the page numbers on before I converted to PDF, I couldn't find it! I'm going to re-evaluate the sending unit mount, I found it strange you had trouble with that area... I will text you about it tomorrow, been meaning to ask you about it.

Ok.

Congratz.

So in short, what is the benefit of this over stock??

DR_ 11-28-2012 11:40 AM

The Z will fuel starve on track on right hand turns on less than about 80% fuel. This fixes that and you can go down to almost an empty tank. This is a must for serious track junkies.

Nice pics! I see there were some small detail changes since I installed mine.

Yea I saw that in CJM instructions last week. I still like the way ours is ran. Not that it makes any difference.

phunk 11-28-2012 09:09 PM

the changes are just related to how the connections are made at the stock pump assembly. i am keeping my eyes peeled for a better way yet. i would like something with an easy disconnect for future service, but it has to be compact enough to be installed in the same manor.

Rusty 05-31-2013 10:54 AM

My first trackday with this. I ran all the way down to 1 dot showing, with no issues.

Heading to track tomorrow for Monday event. Boy howdy do I envy you. I will be running a full tank and burning 5 gallons in 30 minutes. Always waiting in line for gas at the track. You have the answer.

OP

so this new pump uses the old sender unit?

Yeap. It mounts on the new fuel pump in a different location.

Rusty 05-09-2015 11:34 PM

Word of caution. Do not use any lube to help you push the brass fittings on. The hose doesn't like some lubes. And watch your placement of your hose clamps. On the race fuel pump. The middle hose, which supplies the fuel back over the the stock pump. Is high pressure more or less. If you position the hose not far enough on, and the hose clamp is position a little low. You will have a trip on the back of a flatbed. DON'T ask me how I know. :shakes head: TWICE. :shakes head: :icon14:

Other then that. I love it! :D

You have worried now ^^
How long did it take to happen since your installation?

Rusty 05-15-2015 08:07 AM

It took about a year and a half before I had trouble. Did you use anything to help you slide the hose over the fittings?

I bring two 5gal jerry cans of gas with me to top off (waiting for punks fix to arrive). Track gas is super expensive. I fuel starve at exactly half a tank.

Are you going to sears point (or Infineon or whatever there calling it these days?)

As suggested in the guide, I put a little bit of engine oil on some piece of paper and used that paper to lubricate it a little....
Well, we'll see then...
Do you drive your Z much?

You should not have a problem with motor oil. I used the same stuff as I use at work to put fittings together. Never had a problem with rubber hose before. But the hose phunk uses is different for inside the tank. I assume it would be the same. The hose doesn't like silicone lube.

As for driving the Z. I just did a trip to ZDayZ. That was 1500 mile around trip. The Z ran great the whole time. Did the Tail of the Dragon and a lot more. :driving: :driving: :driving:

Note: ENDORSEMENT FOR PHUNK'S RR PUMP AHEAD

This was the first modification I did on my Z planning for the One Lap of America, therefore it has been on the car for a year. I just did 3900 miles in 8 days, tracked at 6 tracks, 2 drag strips and 2 skid pad events. We NEVER showed up to the track over 1/2 a tank and never had an issue. As I said in one of my previous posts, even the GTR guys were a bit jealous of me as they seem to have a starvation issue under 1/2 to 3/4 a tank (same fuel tank??). HUGE HUGE thank you to Charles for this!!
