No scraping metal just drilled a hole..maybe I should try that. Its the thin metal panel where the plastic panel pops into. Rusty- did you connect the large yellow pump(-) to the same ground as the relay black wire?

Man I really hope these don't go away. Would hate to go back to zero off-the-shelf options for fuel starvation.

i think imma order mine come summer during my tracking break

I had to put my order in before Charles doesnt have any left, but it is just a matter of time before he see more guys requesting this mod .. the car is already 4 years old and its getting cheaper to get which also mean more $ for some mods...

Thanks again Mike! I suspect my ground isn't a ground point

Re: the fuel pump ground, I just ran a short wire for that to a ring terminal, and then put that ring terminal on one of the 4 nuts on the very outer cover of the driver's side tank access plate (the one these wires are coming out of the grommet on). The grey paint all over everything in that area isn't very conductive, but the nut threaded on that post conducts fine:
http://www.the370z.com/members/wstar...d-red-wire.jpg Also, a trick worth sharing that really saved me some time/pain during the "Hard Part" in the instructions (hooking up the 3 hoses on the passenger side...): use little strips of duct tape to attach strings to the 3 hoses, and tie a nut to the other end of the strings to give them some weight so they don't get lost or sucked in easily. Then you can drop the hoses in the back/side of the tank, put in the canister, and then pull them back up into range via the strings. Then you can cut/remove the helper as you're installing each one: http://www.the370z.com/members/wstar...-part-step.jpg |
^ thx for the tip, I'm sure that will make more sense once I'm in there! lol
|
Definitely the hardest part. And then to get the O ring set in place and compressed. This is where I kept having a small gas leak.
|
Yeah I had a faint fuel smell still today during a test drive after I filled the tank (level sensor works, yay). Most likely either I screwed up one of the O-rings, or it's what Charles was talking about with putting Teflon on the 3 studs (which I didn't do). Either way those are easy things to mess with at this point, I'll probably go back in there and look at all that tomorrow.

I didn't have any fuel leaks, but I got some aircraft fuel tank sealant and applied it over everything on both sides to be safe. I figured if the factory put some sealant over it, I should too.
Hopefully I never have to service the tank again though, I don't know how hard it will be to remove. |
with some teflon paste on the threads for the 3 main studs, that should be all that is needed. any other leaks would be the stock o-rings which are, in theory, re-useable. but they tend to expand if you get them wet with gas, and it can make them trickier to reinstall.
|
I used the string trick too. Also I put RTV around the 3 studs on the fuel pump to seal it.
|
So yeah my fuel smell was exactly what was expected: lack of sealant on those three studs, and there was a light sheen of fuel on the cover of that unit. The O-rings were still sitting right in their channels perfectly so I didn't touch them. Took me all of 10 minutes to fix it, doing one stud at a time and leaving the can assembled and attached (and another 10-15 minutes to lift each assembled can a little to check O-rings).
|
^ would you help me install mine for some $$? I was going to be down there anyway to have my dad help me install it (he lives north of Houston) but I figure you would be able to knock it out faster and without any mistakes.

There are 2 left now. Based on a PM just sent to me, I believe we will be down to the last 1 within the next few hours.
Yes there will be another batch for sure. It will very likely be a couple months before we build it, as I am struggling to get these new GTR parts all wrapped up at the moment. Thank you everybody. As with all products I have ever built and sold, I will stand behind these items and support them for as long as I am capable of coherent technical conversation. So for anyone who sells their's later, needs a replacement part, or needs technical help for re-configuring it for multiple pumps, etc... I will always take care of it. For as long as I have been in this business, I have always had a reputation for taking a long time to finish new products and always running out of stock... but I make it my first priority to take care of those who take care of me. I am currently shopping CNCs to hopefully resolve my inventory/production delays. I am also exploring some ways to possibly bring down the cost of this product.. but that isnt getting full time attention at the moment. BTW if anyone jumps on the last one... I would prefer to be PM'd here first to make sure someone didnt already jump on it, before making a transaction on the website. Also note that it will be about 2 weeks before the last one can ship. One of the pieces has a big flaw in the anodizing and it has to be re-anodized (which looks 100% as good as first time anodizing, it get stripped before re-anodizing). |
^ you the man.
|
Glad you will be making more! With the new home build im trying to not touch any accounts they are watching, stupid lenders, wish I could pay cash for a house lol.
|
annnnnd it looks like the last one may be gone.
i will post up if anything changes. there is one with dibs from PM contact the last few days.. if he changes his mind on that one, i will post up. otherwise, as far as i can tell so far, we are out of them! thanks everyone |

Thanks to wstar it is installed and I will be testing it this weekend at Motorsports Ranch Cresson. It will be soooo nice to not have to fill up after every session!!

You will love it!

Hey I might be the single most experienced installer of this thing now outside of Phunk himself, I've done two of them :) (Well, I had a lot of help both times, from a local friend on mine and then DR_ did half his own work on his as well).
Loving mine so far. With the rear interior all stripped out you can hear it all the time, and then it gets really noisy once you get well under half a tank and there's not a bunch of fuel immersing it to drown it out. I assume that's normal, but I thought I'd mention it in case Phunk says "No you shouldn't hear anything, it's killing itself!". I don't mind it on my stripped down car, and I bet the interior stuff muffles most of it on normally-equipped cars. I don't think I came back to mention it in this thread, but I did put the thing through its paces (at my level of driving, anyways!) at Texas World Speedway a few weekends ago, and it held up beautifully. Fuel gauge works correctly, nothing leaking, and I only filled up once per day in the morning. Ran down to just under 1/4 tank by the end of the last session each day, no hiccups. Youtube link to my last session on that Sunday. I was under 1/4 tank when I came in from this run: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2-PuW8yy58 |
The only time I hear mine, is on start up. After I push the start buttom, before the engine starts. I hear it prime. After the engine starts, all I hear is the exhaust. LTH's, 12" resonators, CBE. LOL
|
Nice driving. I was wondering if that vette was ever gonna let you by!

I've only been there with Driver's Edge so far, in their Blue Solo, but I think I'm getting close to bumping up a group with them. I've thought about hitting up the TWS PDS events as well, but between work travel and working on the car it's often hard enough just to schedule my TDE events at MSR-H (and now TWS as well). We'll see though, maybe this summer I'll be able to squeeze in some PDS as well.
|
I hear the same constant whirring noise. Phunk said that it was a bigger pump and closer to the driver's ear, so he's not surprised. As long as its not "screaming" he said it should be ok. Glad you're enjoying it..I can't wait to test mine!!

It worked perfectly this weekend. I took it down to 2 dots twice and it never hiccupped even in the "toilet bowl", which is a very long right turn that would make it starve after 7 laps from full before.

I expect the pump to be a little louder than stock, but they shouldn't be too intrusively loud. A screaming pump is often getting ready to die. If the pumps were getting crazy loud for you guys, then I would have to look into it more. It could also be noise from fuel cycling in and out of the surge canister like crazy. Being on the drivers side, at less than a near full tank, the canister isn't submerged anymore, which will increase some of the volume. The pump inside it is completely suspended by soft materials to help make it quieter. It is held from the bottom with a bushing, and supported at the top with a viton oring. |

The unit has so far been successful in its first forced induction install with twin walbros in the road race pump assembly. I will keep you guys updated on that one.
The one that was I mentioning before that I believed to have sold via PM was never sold, so there is one still around. |
