Default Differential discovery!

Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know that there may be a cheaper alternative for those of us that are looking at differentials.

We had a VLSD from a 350 laying around so we played with it, and it worked. All you need is the longer stub from the 350z or 370z with vlsd.

We had to slightly modify the stub by grinding down the tip of it SLIGHTLY but everything fit and worked without any issues.

So all in all, this would be a good bang for the buck mod for those with a base model. I spend 135.xx on the stub, and 100 on the diff. So for under 250.00 with fluid I went from an open diff to a vlsd oem unit.

Hope someone finds this useful, let me know if you have any questions, and if you do not want to modify your stub, we can also work something out to where I can manufacture plug and play stubs for those if you need them and dont feel like measuring and grinding anything.

Mods if this is in the wrong place please delete but I couldnt think of anywhere better to put it.

Thumbs up

What if any difference is there with the gearing on the 350 vs the 370 box?

The ring you swap over so the gear ratio wont change... this is only going from open diff to VLSD. Just a cheap mod to get rid of the dreaded "peg leg"

I dont have full pics of the process but let me see what we do have. It was actually pretty straight forward. Once all of the bracing/exhaust was out of the way it really didnt take that long. I will work on a step by step guide this weekend for you guys.

This is well known. The diff assemblies are identical, only change was the move from a 3.5 to 3.7 ratio

it is actually not a 100% straight forward swap, there was some slight modification required to make it fit, so I dont think you are correct in saying that all the switched was the gear ratio. The stub had to be modified to fit in the diff assembly correctly with the vlsd(long) stub from a 350z.

I just wanted to post up to give people some cheap options to upgrade to an lsd without spending 1500+. I didnt see anyone else on here post about this, so I did.

Yeah, you changed the same stub axle you would have needed to change if you put in the VLSD off another 370z....

This swap has been done countless times.

Awesome.

Like I said, this was not plug and play and I used all 350z parts, some of which needed to be modified.

I was just trying to spread some light on options that are available. It looks like there were a few people in here that did not know this, and may benefit from it.

While I appreciate you bringing up the fact that this has been done countless times, I am talking specifically about all 350z parts used to do this swap to keep the cost down. If you have a link to someone who swapped all 350z parts in their 370z diff, please post a link and I will be more than happy to quit posting.

This guy did it already:

Nissan 370Z Forum - View Profile: Red__Zed

The parts are identical. To go from base to VLSD, you need a stub from a VLSD equipped model, doesnt matter whether the parts come from a 350 or 370.

Hell, people have been putting the lsd in fx35s for years now.
