What I've done is this: I took one of the curved sticky mounts and placed it just off center on the front of my bumper. This way when I mount the camera it is positioned with the lens almost centered on the car. I think it may be off an inch or so but it's obviously not noticed in play back.

How about on the outside of the quarter window? Angle it so that it can see your steering wheel, while at the same time getting the track.
