I know quite a few people that successfully run the APR wings, but I've also seen one catastrophically fail at 150 mph in a high HP car. With the Z's limited HP you'll be fine. |
When you say "catastrophically fail", do you mean some kind of airflow problem that resulted in a sudden loss of downforce at a critical time? Or do you mean the downforce broke/detached the wing itself (which I guess would cause a pretty sudden loss of downforce too)?

When you add more HP to a stock car this is something to be considered. http://elementtuning.com/store/wp-co...ngfailure1.jpg http://elementtuning.com/store/wp-co...ngfailure2.jpg |
do a search on wing damage sti vir on youtube. the guy snapped his wing and stuffed it into the wall.

Btw, Chris and Josh if ya'all read this, how did your oil temps fare for the day?
Mine didnt cross 230 and as soon asi hit my cooldown lap it was 200 or below by the time i hit the pits. |
Wow that's nice and low. I guess the longer high speed sections helps a bit with cooling though, and presumably you guys are running 25 or 34 -row coolers? What was ambient like?

the long straights might have helped but we were also gunning it up into 5th gear on those. and I generally checked the oil right as i hit the straight/banks as i have time during that time. |
Well running into the bottom of 5th for the straights means high speed cooling airflow plus low RPMs, it's all good for the oil temps.
|
Spohn your car sounded amazing out on the track.

I have the 34R also. My temps stayed about 220/230. But on my last session I hit 250. But temps were 90 and I defiantly was pushing it harder. But it would cool down quickly. I just put it in 5th on the cool down lap and was back to 200. |
its not so much revs in the 5s. its the time you spend at 7s that bake the oil

and only into 4th if 3rd was in 7's... etc etc. |
Yeah on my last MSR-H day, I would get up to 240 pretty quick and then semi-stabilize, and then it would slowly creep out towards 250-255 the longer I stayed out there. But (a) I'm a on 19-row, and (b) on the longest straight I couldn't quite finish 4th gear, so I spent a lot of time crawling through the high range to get just short of the top and then never get to upshift.
I'm planning to stick with my 19-row for the rest of this year as the ambient temps are only going to continue dropping now, but I want to upgrade before the hot season next year. Either slap on a 25/34R cooler, or *maybe* look at doing something crazy like dropping the oil:air cooler, upgrading the radiator, and doing an oil:water heat exchanger. Should be less hose length / pressure drop / weight from that setup anyways, and I suspect it will actually cool better (just based on the fact that AM Perf is running this setup for very long hardcore races). Still waiting to see how Travis's plays out first though. |
I wouldn't mind doing the heat exchanger either. But thinking of going a oil pan spacer also.
|
I have Z1 25 row and my oil temp high that I saw was 245 maybe 250. but for the most part stayed around 230.
It was nice to see us three there together in the video. I wish we were not in traffic for most of the video. And I really wish I had a video of my 3rd run. I know that was by far my fastest run. But it was a good write up Chris. For me it was my first track event as well and could not have put it better. I hope to make it out to several more events, I'm hooked now! Time to start stockpiling tires and brake pads. :happydance: |

Yeah he has several, and I'm buying all the pics he took of my car! I talked to him last night and he said he had a few more he just has to edit them. Can't imaging having to go through all the photos like he does. Also I'm going to see about having him enter them in to the 2012 Calendar that was in the Z Nationals booklet. Its at Down Shift Calendars

not a problem^^
here's chris coming off the back stretch: http://jpmcgphotography.smugmug.com/...IMG5198-XL.jpg and coming around turn 4 onto the high bank: http://jpmcgphotography.smugmug.com/...IMG5843-XL.jpg chris really did look good out there from what i could see. great lines, fast pace, good passes. job well done sir  also, there's an event at VIR that same weekend (the one after thanksgiving) that i always go to every year (as does mike usually). it's through www.asphaltventures.com . i think it's a little cheaper tho it is a bit further to drive... |
Thanks man. Can I purchase these now? Do you happen to have more of them?
|
yea i've got more, might want to wait and see what all shots i end up with. think i got some good/better ones of your car in that last run group. josh, too. hang tight and i'll let you know when i'm done with them. hopefully by this time tomorrow. works been hell this week schedule wise, but it's all for the best so i can be at Road Atlanta friday and saturday!
|
Awesome. I want them all.

^ Nice pic. Lookin good Spohn. You said you bought a wing correct?? What you get?
In for more track pics. |
I bought the APR GTC 200 universal wing. It's about 10" high, 59 1/2" wide, and the stands are 29 1/2" apart. It's more conservative IMO. The GTC 300 wing is what is really made for our cars for the beat results but I wanted smaller. Will work perfect for me.
Another nice pic Patrick. Can't wait to buy them. I like all the options you offer on your site. |
nice pics
