My car doesn't even have a spoiler so I need something back there and what better than a wing that serves a function for my future events. Mostly I'll be going to Road Atlanta.

Fair enough. Just remember a wing adds downforce but it also adds drag and will reduce you max speed on the straights. Avoid the temptation to try and set it to the highest setting, set it conservative and see what happens. Wings are a balancing act of high speed corner performance vs straight away performance.

I know quite a few people that successfully run the APR wings, but I've also seen one catastrophically fail at 150 mph in a high HP car. With the Z's limited HP you'll be fine.

wstar 09-27-2011 02:04 PM

When you say "catastrophically fail", do you mean some kind of airflow problem that resulted in a sudden loss of downforce at a critical time? Or do you mean the downforce broke/detached the wing itself (which I guess would cause a pretty sudden loss of downforce too)?

Thanks for looking out. Rep to yea. I have already talked to Mike about it and where to set it. He has his set to the lowest also.

The extreme downforce on the wing at high speed at the highest setting caused a structural failure of the wing support. The wing was simply being pushed beyond it's design capabilities. The end result was a sudden loss of downforce as the wing detached and a heavy crash. Fortunately the car was caged and the driver was uninjured. He even has it on video :)

When you add more HP to a stock car this is something to be considered.

do a search on wing damage sti vir on youtube. the guy snapped his wing and stuffed it into the wall.

I'm not sure of the exact amount, but I think I picked up about 10mph on the esses at Road Atlanta, I do know for sure that the car feels much more planted with the GTC300 I have. I lost 7mph top end on the main straight though. Mine is set at the lowest setting of 0 degrees angle of attack.

daisuke149 09-28-2011 11:43 AM

Btw, Chris and Josh if ya'all read this, how did your oil temps fare for the day?

Mine didnt cross 230 and as soon asi hit my cooldown lap it was 200 or below by the time i hit the pits.

wstar 09-28-2011 12:12 PM

Wow that's nice and low. I guess the longer high speed sections helps a bit with cooling though, and presumably you guys are running 25 or 34 -row coolers? What was ambient like?

i was running 34 z1. ambient read around 88 when on the track that i remember.

the long straights might have helped but we were also gunning it up into 5th gear on those. and I generally checked the oil right as i hit the straight/banks as i have time during that time.

wstar 09-28-2011 12:36 PM

Well running into the bottom of 5th for the straights means high speed cooling airflow plus low RPMs, it's all good for the oil temps.

MACSIMIZER 09-28-2011 12:57 PM

Spohn your car sounded amazing out on the track.

: ) not bottom of 5th. the rpm's were above 5k. I dont believe my rpm's dropped below 4k at any point on the track.

Thanks. I got a lot of comments on it.

I have the 34R also. My temps stayed about 220/230. But on my last session I hit 250. But temps were 90 and I defiantly was pushing it harder. But it would cool down quickly. I just put it in 5th on the cool down lap and was back to 200.

cossie1600 09-28-2011 01:48 PM

its not so much revs in the 5s. its the time you spend at 7s that bake the oil

oviously. but i only went into 5th if my 4th was at 7's...

and only into 4th if 3rd was in 7's... etc etc.

wstar 09-28-2011 02:06 PM

Yeah on my last MSR-H day, I would get up to 240 pretty quick and then semi-stabilize, and then it would slowly creep out towards 250-255 the longer I stayed out there. But (a) I'm a on 19-row, and (b) on the longest straight I couldn't quite finish 4th gear, so I spent a lot of time crawling through the high range to get just short of the top and then never get to upshift.

I'm planning to stick with my 19-row for the rest of this year as the ambient temps are only going to continue dropping now, but I want to upgrade before the hot season next year. Either slap on a 25/34R cooler, or *maybe* look at doing something crazy like dropping the oil:air cooler, upgrading the radiator, and doing an oil:water heat exchanger.

Should be less hose length / pressure drop / weight from that setup anyways, and I suspect it will actually cool better (just based on the fact that AM Perf is running this setup for very long hardcore races). Still waiting to see how Travis's plays out first though.

SPOHN 09-28-2011 02:20 PM

I wouldn't mind doing the heat exchanger either. But thinking of going a oil pan spacer also.

Nismo221 09-28-2011 02:38 PM

I have Z1 25 row and my oil temp high that I saw was 245 maybe 250. but for the most part stayed around 230.

It was nice to see us three there together in the video. I wish we were not in traffic for most of the video. And I really wish I had a video of my 3rd run. I know that was by far my fastest run.

But it was a good write up Chris. For me it was my first track event as well and could not have put it better. I hope to make it out to several more events, I'm hooked now! Time to start stockpiling tires and brake pads.

i saw a photo of your car on Patrick's thing. Those door handles looked good :p

Nismo221 09-28-2011 02:55 PM

Yeah he has several, and I'm buying all the pics he took of my car! I talked to him last night and he said he had a few more he just has to edit them. Can't imaging having to go through all the photos like he does. Also I'm going to see about having him enter them in to the 2012 Calendar that was in the Z Nationals booklet. Its at Down Shift Calendars

HKYStormFront 09-28-2011 03:09 PM

not a problem^^

here's chris coming off the back stretch:

and coming around turn 4 onto the high bank:
http://jpmcgphotography.smugmug.com/...IMG5843-XL.jpg

chris really did look good out there from what i could see. great lines, fast pace, good passes. job well done sir

also, there's an event at VIR that same weekend (the one after thanksgiving) that i always go to every year (as does mike usually). it's through www.asphaltventures.com . i think it's a little cheaper tho it is a bit further to drive...

SPOHN 09-28-2011 03:28 PM

Thanks man. Can I purchase these now? Do you happen to have more of them?

HKYStormFront 09-28-2011 03:38 PM

yea i've got more, might want to wait and see what all shots i end up with. think i got some good/better ones of your car in that last run group. josh, too. hang tight and i'll let you know when i'm done with them. hopefully by this time tomorrow. works been hell this week schedule wise, but it's all for the best so i can be at Road Atlanta friday and saturday!

SPOHN 09-28-2011 03:41 PM

Awesome. I want them all.

^ Nice pic. Lookin good Spohn. You said you bought a wing correct?? What you get?
In for more track pics.

SPOHN 09-29-2011 02:33 PM

I bought the APR GTC 200 universal wing. It's about 10" high, 59 1/2" wide, and the stands are 29 1/2" apart. It's more conservative IMO. The GTC 300 wing is what is really made for our cars for the beat results but I wanted smaller. Will work perfect for me.

Another nice pic Patrick. Can't wait to buy them. I like all the options you offer on your site.

cossie1600 09-29-2011 02:52 PM

nice pics
