Thing is, one strip is not abandoned. The 10,000 ft strip is actually being leased by Skydive Long Island, who also opposed the idea of sharing the property with cars. Basically, that entire area has a d*ck up their *** about cars trying to be in a safe and controlled environment.

Its really messed up. The runway not being used is in really good shape. They could maybe just spruce it up a tad and let us run with all the proper precautions of course. I hate LI cant wait to move!

You know how expensive it is to build and maintain a dragway. Have you seen how much it is to repave your driveway? Add concrete wall on each side of the strip, EMTs. Track sweeper, insurance and all the other BS. Good luck finding a town that will let you do it fast and furious style, especially after the first accident.

Well almost every other state has several drag strips and race courses and we have none. So I guess its not that big of a deal.

Well let me start off by saying thanks to the people that have had helpful comments.

But I started this thread to find out more about what it takes to run a drag strip. Yes everyone knows large straight flat land, concreate and alot of money. I'm looking for info. like what kind of software do tracks use to keep up with time or what kind of glue is used to prep the track. I dont want to have to sort through a load of crap about you dont have that kind of money and this thread is a joke or stupid. If you dont like it dont read it or comment. And yes I understand to most of you I'm some 22 year old kid. But dont pretend to know what I do for a living and what I can I can not afford. I dont think that you are my accountant now are you.

I understand this is going to take alot of money. That is why I said I was toying with the idea and would take several years of planning. I'm not pretending that I'm just going to build a track overnight. I have alot I have to figure out before I make that kind of investment. Because this is something that would require a lot of my time and to someone that already works 7 days a week and any where from 16-18 hours a day time is hard to comeby. So again I have to figure all that stuff out. But this thread is for suggestions on things I could be leaving out or suggestions on what addons a drag strip needs to make it better and more functional.

One is leased by the sky dive place the other is owned by some other guy. Im really close friends with the guy who owns the motorcross track by the baseball feilds in grumman, right next to the abandoned airstrip. Hes trying to buy the airstrip from the guy and HOFULLY buulding a drag stip there.... as long as riverhead lets him. and he most def has the money for it.
