Can't drift my Z

well guys i have a problem. The other night I was trying to drift and I fail my diferential for some reason didnt lock, and VDC was off. Is there anything I can do to lock the diferential in my 370z touring? or my Z is not made for drifting, only the sport P can?

brian0128 03-22-2011 06:50 AM

I'm curious how you were trying to drift the car. What exactly was limiting you from putting the car into a slide and keeping it there? I'm not a drifter myself, but I don't think anyone would be able to help unless they know what technique you are trying to use and what is happening when you are doing it.

m4a1mustang 03-22-2011 07:00 AM

The non-sport package cars use an open differential, so you're not going to get any lock.

Hope you were on a closed course. :)

ChrisSlicks 03-22-2011 07:10 AM

With enough room on the track you should be able to start the drift no problem, however without a limited slip differential your going to have difficulty keeping it there. Aftermarket is the way to go.

cossie1600 03-22-2011 08:39 AM

ABLS will kick in at some point anyway, pointless

Great answer. +1.

I can feel my insurance go up as we speak. I really hope this wasn't on a public road. I don't think there are any cars designed specifically to drift. In fact, I'm pretty sure engineers designed the car to be fast around corners.

Anyway, mustang is right, the touring w/o sport, doesn't have a LSD. Even if you had the sports package though, you should probably upgrade the LSD if you plan on doing any serious drifting. There are a few threads on that upgrade if you do a search.

Active Brake Limited Slip. It sends a brake pulse to the spinning rear wheel, a poor man's LSD. It can be disabled by disconnecting the Bosch module under the center console next to the e-brake.

cossie1600 03-22-2011 09:40 AM

The stagger tires/ABLS/suspension all made the 370 less slide friendly than the 350. If you have to ask how to do it, chances are that you can't do it :)

anyone can learn brah

Xander117 03-22-2011 09:51 AM

"All right, look, man, there's lots of ways you can do this, all right?

Hand brakingis the easiest, so the first thing I want you to do,is rip that e-brake.All right, after you rip the e-brake,then I want you to power over." :roflpuke2:

RCZ 03-22-2011 09:55 AM

Sport adds:
19" wheels
Viscous LSD
Akebono brakes
SRM
Rear spoiler

Cmike2780 03-22-2011 10:48 AM

19" wheels
Viscous LSD
Akebono brakes
SRM
Rear spoiler
+wider tires
+chin spoiler
+gear indicator on tach.

The good news is that you can get aftermarket parts for almost all of the above except the SRM.

Just not at the same price tag, which is why so many people go for the sport package. Though if you are serious about drifting then this probably shouldnt be an issue.

Can you elaborate on this?

Does this throw warning lights?

I've noticed when I'm at the track, on a good launch with VDC off, the traction light will still come on and cut my power.

Will unplugging that solve that issue?

:eekdance:

True, which is why the SP is such a good value overall. For those turning the Z into a drift car though, most of the SP options get replaced with more heavy duty goodies.

The slip light will flash yes. It can happen even in a straight line, particularly in the base, or in either the sport or the base if you lift a wheel a bit in a corner.

Unplugging the module will eliminate the intervention and allow the base owners to do a full one-wheel peel :)

cossie1600 03-22-2011 03:14 PM

It doesn't cut your power, it just apply the brakes to slow your power...

Don't feel too bad, it's not like you can't get one installed. The sports package comes with a VLSD anyways. Won't do a single wheel peel, but it won't lock up under heavy torque in the corners. Not as effective as an LSD. Plenty of threads on LSD on this site. Should run you around $1,200.

Around town is not really the place to be trying any of this, please be safe and take it somewhere that you dont endanger other drivers.

cossie1600 03-23-2011 09:04 AM

Paul Walker taught me how to drive, I am all set!

Im pretty sure he was saying that he's going to spend thousands of dollars on performance parts so he can tool around town, not to drift around town.

Money well spent!

^ agree

I have the base model to and I have that problem. I can't drift my car without some speed

and just to let you know the after market LSD will drop the warranty on the drive-train

Davey 05-04-2011 08:21 PM

1. Get a barge
2. Pull the Z onto it
3. Shove off
4. Drift away!

(Please do this instead of driving like a jackass on the streets. )
