Recommendation on helments
What helmets do you recommend? I'm just looking for a decent helmet for tracking for maybe three to four times a year at most. A helmet that breaths good is defiantly a must for me.
|
i personally picked a simpson bandit i think it was called. not super expensive, but looks good, breath's well. I'd say go try em out though.. i had a hard time fitting my big head into most helmets. Summit racing pretty much has alot of em in stock and they let you try out each one

Simpson Diamondback...........its the same as the Stigs :)

Just FYI :) DAN |
Several friends of mine including myself have all been down this road and really your best bet is to spend the $$$ and get a nice helmet.
Even for 3-4 times a year, helmets are something we mostly hold onto and never get rid of, espically if you purchased a nice one up front. You'll have it forever. And with comfort you get what you pay for. Spend the $$ and get an Arai, You can even find some great deals on some of last years models / overstock that would be perfect and won't break the bank. Just try one on! |
I have a pyrotect...it's actually a Bell helmet (you can use bell visors) and is much cheaper. Mine was $200.

Pyrotect does make good helmets. I have one and it has treated me well. I think I paid 270 for it back in the day. It is time for me to upgrade, though. I definitely want to go get a lighter helmet this time. |
Thanks for all the suggestions. I looked at some Simpsons yesterday at Summit Racing. I have an account there. Need to go online to see there hole inventory.
I also need to update myself on the safety standards. |
I'm surprised no one has mentioned the Bell M4. It's really comfortable and cheap SA2005 helmet. You can pick it up for less than $400 pretty easily and it's HANS compatible if you ever go that route.
|
All these sound great. Going to have to make a decision. The Arai does look good.
|
I think the bandit was 300 at summit and had all the ratings necessary as well.
P.S is that your dog in the ava? |
I have a shoei open face SNELL + DOT approved helmet - use it for the track - only problem is you need to also have some form of eye cover so if you got some sunglasses you will be all good. And since its not a full face - it breathes AWESOME - except it cost a fuckload

That was my dog. Non replaceable . Name was Hiedi. Was a ex police dog we got from someone. Had for years. I love German Shepards. There the only dog to have. I plan to get another when I have lots of time to train. |
I like German Shepard's, great dogs and easy to train.
A couple of places are having blow outs on overstock SA 2005 helmets. Here's one. Sizes are pretty much limited to tiny and huge at this point. SPS Weekly Features |
I just might call them. Might be my calling there. I wear a small, almost a medium. Depends on the make. 22'' is my head size.

Here is my helmet. Not most peoples' first choice, but it is a free loaner from the US Army.
|
Now that's what I'm talking about. Props to you. Real helmet there. Thanks for what you do.

Oh come on' you all know what I mean. Who throws away their helmets?? Yes I am well aware of the saftey requirements but this guy is planning on doing a few events a year. That means mostly HPDE's which we all know usually let you on w/ motorcycle helmets, and rarely check to see the date on the helmets. I've been doing events for years and I know your at the track often as well Chris, so I know your familuar with how many guys are on track without the "proper" saftey gear (expired helmets, moto helmets, etc) I'm just saying you can find a GP5S and GP5W's for few hundered more than the mentioned helmets and they are worth every penny, in fit, finish, and they look amazing! Do it! You won't be dissapointed  If Arai, is completely out of the question. HJC has a some really aforadable options or a Sparco for a few $$ more. P.S the Dog pic is Great!! =) |

like people mentioned, sa2005 helmets will last you another 4 years so that would be my recommendation. personally i have a g-force pro eliminator in matte black that was around $300. i prefer closed helmets as your windows are down when tracking. as for people that do events with motorcycle helmets, thats bad advice. stick with sa2005 so you dont have any problems down the road whether it's auto-x or hpde.

Always buy a good helmet. As if anything goes wrong and you have an accident. ( hopefully never happens ) How much is your head worth , Its not worth taking a chance of getting a serous head injury.

Pyrotect helmets are pretty good. Also HJC helmets. Both of which have very cheap helmet options. We currently just got some SA2010 pyrotect helmets in if anyone is interested:
