Do you have any video? I want to see the track layout :excited:

Here's a vid from last session:
Straight: (I had a kart didn't accelerate, turn or even brake well. Hence the bad time) :shakes head:

I would like to try that, looks like fun! Especially on a rainy day!

shaun66 07-20-2010 08:37 PM

Nice! Our track has that as a racing class now. They're called chondas at our track lol. On a sunny day we get 15 of those at the track its awsome:stirthepot:

  HOLY sh*t! I have never seen wheel come off before. Thank god for neck braces!

wow.. those 125cc karts are awesome. How much are these karts? I'm so tempted to buy one :excited:

shaun66 07-20-2010 09:02 PM

Yeah they rip your neck off dude trust me. Unfortunately the fastest ones are also the most expensive :( . New ones cost like 8 grand lol. We got a used on off ebay for $3500 or something, you gotta look for the deals, we looked for 3 months before buying.

I recommend going to a track that does monthly club races and seeing which racing classes are most popular and just ask around on race days.

AK, a good, competitive, used 125cc gearbox (shifty) Kart goes for about $6000 to $8000, plus the expense and up-keep of running them... gas, tires, driving gear, frequent engine rebuilds, etc... It can get expensive.

I have 5 national and 3 international Karting championships back in my teen days. :driving:

Scott @ RA 07-20-2010 09:10 PM

Nice pics Shaun, looks like fun.... brings back some good memories for me too.

shaun66 07-20-2010 09:14 PM

Yeah Im doing a bit of regional racing and i go to every club race right now. Maybe a national race in my future:happydance:

 That's cool. hmmm as much as I love driving them, it seems like an expansive hobby to buy one. There's an Adult league in NJMP and MAGP (indoor). It'll probably be much cheaper.

:icon18: :bowrofl::bowrofl: That's awesome reaction time!

shaun66 07-20-2010 09:30 PM

yeah karting isn't cheap once you get competitive like Scott said. The chonda class is the only "cheap" one which is a $200 honda motor and the cheapest used chassis you can find! Which is why it caught on so easily:tup:

My dad is thinking about starting chonda:eekdance::happydance:

AK, I was 'Banned for life" from the carts at Action Park! :driving:

shaun66 07-20-2010 10:04 PM

Im sure if u go back they will take your money lol. I used to kart at a place called track 21 in Houston before i started competitively.. good times haha

lmao, Action Park in NJ used to have carts at their amusment park, the engine had a governor on the throttle but I noticed if you bent it the throttle would open wide. They threw up a bunch of cones as I came around and forced me off the track when they saw me going twice as fast as everyone else :icon17:..."banned for life" rofl

shaun66 07-20-2010 10:27 PM

gotta get an advantage somehow. they're just angry they didn't figure it out first:p

theDreamer 07-20-2010 10:29 PM

I have gone to Track 21 a few times, but never actually went karting their. :(
Shaun, should check out the Texas section for upcoming Z events to meet up, next one is July 28 at Hooters on 290.

Chriz 07-20-2010 10:50 PM

Where is this? I live in Katy and the only place ive heard of was track 21, never been though. That looks like alot of fun

edit: just saw the link you posted, looks like a good substitute for MSR

^^^ ouch...
I am thinking of buying a shifter kart.
Heard it was the most purest form of racing... Well see. lol
What would you say it would cost you to maintain one of these things..
Yearly...?

shaun66 11-25-2010 09:47 PM

Thank you for the pics:tiphat:
As for maintenance is just depends on how competitive you wanna be. Tires are $250 a set then you've got fuel, gearbox, oils and brakes. What breaks the bank is an engine rebuild every season:(

As for purest form of racing i can agree to that:tup:

This is awesome! I wish I got into karting at a young age. I've been going recently to an indoor track with friends and its way more fun than I've ever had in a car. How much would it cost to buy these "chonda" cheapo karts. I want to get into karting but I don't have deep pockets or that much time to commit.

My dream is to have some property with a karting track and a bunch of karts to run on weekends with friends haha.

BTW. what exactly are you doing in the first picture with your right hand on the motor?

Well you can get the motor at harbor freight with a coupon for like a $100 and then an old chassis for like $500 and Bam! gokart! Then you need helmet, suit, transportation and some regular pump gas and your pretty much good to go!

My Dad said the same thing to me he wants to get a lot of land and build a racetrack in his backyard when he retires lol.

In that first pic i'm leaning out the motor by adjusting the low speed jetting on the carburetor. So when we get to the line i won't bog down at the start and then I'll turn it back and dump more fuel into to the engine and go fasta after the start!

Thanks I'll look into it! That doesn't sound as bad as I was reading (5k+ to get started). What kind of motors are these? The track I've been going to has 2 levels of karts, the regular and "super karts" that they say are 270cc motors but not shifter karts. We qualified for the super karts our 2nd time out and have been running them ever since and they are a ton of fun.

BTW how much is track time and where can you find a list of locations?

The way I look at it is the faster you go the more expensive it gets. The chonda motor is a Honda lawn mower engine I believe. What you want to do is figure out where the closest track is and what classes your local track runs so you won't be in a class by yourself. My friend showed me where our local track was because its in the middle of nowhere, so try Google or ask around i guess lol. I just realized its off season to so try and figure out when the first race is and go watch one first and see how everything works. They are a huge amount of fun though so you won't regret it!

Karting is soooo much fun. I envy you mainlanders because you have lots of motorsports options for kids. We only have junior dragsters and moto-x. We don't even have SCCA on my island.

I gotta give props to the kids that are involved in karting. It's amazing how much skill it takes to be a good racer. Having never been involved in anything more than drag racing, it was eye opening to watch the documentary Racing Dreams and tv show Star Racer. Being a racer is a lot more challenging than I ever thought it would be.
