14.1@103mph...why?
I am new to the thread, just bought a 370 about a month ago. The car has 1000 miles on it and I decided to head to the track to see what I can run. I have had previous track experience. I used to have Ford Probe GT and a 07 Eclipse GT that I have taken to the track. The 370z is bone stock and I was hoping to run mid 13's. I could not get a decent launch the whole nighy and the best time I ran was 14.1@103mph, yes 103mph! Has anyone else not been able to break 13's?? Any tips on launching techniques? Thanks in advance.

What were your 60' times?

Also... 6MT or 7AT? I'm guessing 6MT...
|
There are so many variables were do you start?
|
From the several post I've seen many manual owners do poorly in the 1/4 mile. On the other hand automatic owners seem to hover around 13.3 sec.
|
people just dont know how to drive stick well these days. We're last of a dieing breed lol
|
My 60 ft times were around 2.4 most of the time. I have been driving stick all my life, I guess I just have to get used to the car a little more.

I was launching at 3k rpms, just feathering it, and I was shifting at the redline. The weather was pretty hot, about 80-85 degrees. I didnt check my tire pressure.
|
Was the track prepped well? did you use the water pit? how much tire spin before you hooked up? what model do you have? base or SP? what were your oil temps?
|
Yeah, looks like you. Need to practice more with thiscar. You should be cutting 2.0 60' times if the track is prppped ok. This is a hard car to launch. 2.4 60's are definitely what's killing you.

Nice break-in technique! Your car is never going to be fast. NEVER. LMAO! 13s? You'll be lucky to beat a Prius! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA! http://www.the370z.com/images/370zfo...0in%20370z.PNG |

Mean guy! Have to admit it's that "reduced engine performance" line that keeps me under 4k for now... |
I prefer the abuse break in method. This guy says i'll make more power in the long run.. I think this has been posted before. I think the whole under 4k for 1k is BS.

I am not worried about the break in at 1200 miles. I wrote 1000, but its really around 1150 before I took it to the track. So really, I guess I did it at the right time. That was the first time I ever floored it thru the gears. I really just wanted to get some launch tips, didnt want to hear from pessimistic people, but I guess all car forums are the same.
I didnt use the water pit, and I had tire spin almost every launch. I really could not figure out how to launch this car. Sometimes, I even had tire spin when I shifted into 2nd gear. So what techniques can I do to get 1.9-2.0 60ft times? |

To the thread starter: Launch at when you see the last yellow, not when you see the green. Drop some rear tire pressure. You might be jumping off the clutch too fast and being too aggressive with the throttle at the start. You have to feather both momentarily to get the best hookup you can, otherwise you're just going to spin street tires and do a slow time. |
When you launch doesn't really matter unless you're racing the guy in the other lane. The clock doesn't start 'til you trip the starting laser. You could sit there for a minute after the green if you wanted (and the track crews didn't get pissed) :D

Its all about the launch. My best was 13.9@106 and i suck at launching
|
Yeah I waited to take mine to the track, only after 3,250miles and Amsoil, K&N High flow oil filter change. and ran 13.3 for my best of the day
Should have waited for the break in period to be over DAN |

Sorry but the problem is the driver.

You know, when i had my Subaru WRX with my PPG Built transmission i was launching that sucker at 6k. 245's on all for. It seemed like nothing could ever beat me off the line and actually nothing did! ;p
I havent taken my z to the track yet. Has only a 1,000 miles on her. I have to say on the break in period, this is such a argued subject. Most engine builders will tell you, Abuse it a little to seat the rings right while others want you to baby it. Ryan |
I don't really like drag racing but just about every vehicle I've ever owned has been put on the dyno with only a couple hundred miles on the odo.

my street tires were good for a 12.8009 @110.33 and they were the 19's.
It cut a 1.964 60 ft time. Its also a 7 AT. |

im with Z eliminator. in that i have no trouble whatsoever launching this car. and im on 245s. this car is very capable of 2.0 60s in stock strim with stock tires. even more so with you sport package guys with the 275s.
|
Your launch is accounting for most of your 14.1 second time, followed up by shifting right at the limiter very quickly an keeping the car straight. It takes practice, but more track time will bring those times down into the 13's!
Another factor is gas, which I have found seems to make a noticable difference since some gas will cause KR more than others. It's all about the formula. My 07 350Z always ran best on QT 93. If it wasn't for the slave cylinder issue, it would have seen a high 12 stock. As it stood I had to feather it at no more than 2,500-3K rpms, or the pedal pressure would drop. Doing that though, it would run 13.1's pretty consistently and trapped as high as 109.03. The 370Z should be able to beat that mark by a little. Practice, and you will be happy with the results. Oh, and make sure to do a little quick tire cleaning burn out, for just a few seconds. It helps to bring the rubber up to temp and clean off all the crap that is stuck to your tires, before launching. |
No there is no transmsion modes for the 7 At .
Im waiting for GTM to get me the torque converter. The 7 At shift hard the harder you push it, I try to shift at 7900. |
