Totally understood. Wasn't meant as a dig. That's definitely negligence though. You could always sue...

I was with ya :tiphat:

Unfortunately, another example of "not worth my time." And the dealer was already helping me out with the airbag stuff. I chalked it up to a win that they didn't break anything else :icon17: :wtf2:

My thinking was also if the PS steering pump goes out, I just get a much better arm work out until I replace it, right? :driving:

Picking up a vented hood this weekend unexpectedly :D

Been looking through the forum for finned diff cover discussions. I'm getting a Wavetrac differential, so I probably don't need a diff cooler. Initially I was looking at the Z1 high capacity finned diff cover, but I'm not real happy with the way Z1 has been treating their customers lately. Plus it interferes with the FI exhaust and will require trimming of the fins.

Does anyone know if the fins on the Nismo finned diff cover interfere with the FI exhaust? Any additional thoughts on why one might be better or worse than the other?

NorthStyle 04-17-2019 11:07 AM

IIRC IPLG37 had a Nismo cover for sale not too long ago. I was interested in it but like you, I didn't know (and he was unsure) if it fit the FI exhaust without trimming so I held off.

JARblue 04-17-2019 11:17 AM

Pretty sure Hotrodz has Nismo cover with FI exhaust. Don't think he had to trim anything though. I was just trying to confirm. Z1 high capacity requires a fin or two to be trim IIRC. If you get the 3" FI exhaust you have to practically hack one whole side of fins off the Z1 cover.

I have the Nismo cover and FI exhaust and not issues. It’s close but doesn’t rub. Seriously doubt that helps you any since I have a G.

JARblue 04-17-2019 11:26 AM

Bob confirmed that the Nismo finned diff cover does not interfere with the 2.5" FI exhaust.

Good lord... trying to replace the aerocatch latches on my new hood. I've dropped at least 8 of the tiny backplate nuts into the hood cavity. Managed to recover most of them. But there are 2 still down in there. Cannot for the life of me get them to dislodge. Even with a friend shaking the damn hood in all directions. Anyone have any thoughts as to the most likely placed they got stuck? I'm not leaving them in there. I got most of them with a strong magnet because they didn't drop far (stuck above the vents). But I'll have to use a coat hanger or something to dislodge the last ones it seems. Just trying to figure out where they are :shakes head: it's a Seibon vented CF hood...

And this is why I'm done fùcking with the car. The littlest crap turns into a huge pile of bs. I don't have time for this shìt. Cancelled a date to figure this out and now I'm worse off than when I started lol :gtfo2:

JARblue 04-17-2019 09:03 PM

I'll mess with it later. Best approach seems to be taping a strong magnet to the coat hanger and scrape around the inside of the hood I guess...

Rusty 04-17-2019 09:09 PM

Every project on the car. You figure it's going to take X amount of time to do it. In reality. Triple the time you had planned on. And if you don't have the experience doing it. Triple the time again.

JARblue 04-17-2019 09:11 PM

Pretty much everything I've ever done on the Z was a first time for me. The bigger the job, the more realistic my expectations are. My problem is the smaller jobs lol

No more small shìt. I'll take the hood to a body shop. Then I'm going to DIY the Wavetrac install :rofl2:

BettyZ 04-17-2019 09:23 PM

It's always the littlest ****. Pulling the OEM cats for the first time took me an hour; demon bolts, 15 minutes; new speakers, 4 hours (fitment issues).

Smart move cancelling the date JAR, always good to let them know where they stand in the hierarchy of things

You have a dial indicator to check backlash? And a mike to check the thickness of the skims?

They have both been on the tools list for a couple of years lol. But I never went so far as to spend the money on a diff. Now I'm like fùck that. I'll buy the diff and pay the labor.

FWIW, I'm helping out a fellow forum member with some fluid changes this weekend. It will be good to get dirty again :)

Last mod I did was engine bay dress up bolts

Thought about showing up an hour late. After a couple of margaritas. Rub my hands all over the undercarriage and don't wash them. Then gauge her reaction and go from there lol

JARblue 04-17-2019 09:38 PM

Oh and I did get one of the last nuts. I'm pretty sure there's one more down there. Or else it fell out (doubt it).

JARblue 04-17-2019 09:40 PM

Also, I did get a hold of Mr. Gale. He's moving forward on a single pod a-pillar for me :)

JARblue 04-17-2019 09:44 PM

Been eyeballing one of these hitches for a while. This is totally doable

That's the perfect prelude to getting your hands on her undercarriage lol

Jar,
I have pretty much every one of your mods on your list and then some. Done most work myself. Let me know if you have any specific questions. Enjoy it!

JARblue 04-30-2019 03:06 PM

Tomorrow or at least sometime this week I'm going to meet with Kevin to try and put some organization to this build process. The labor costs are adding up quick, so I'm rethinking some DIY stuff.

What I really don't want to do myself is the stuff behind the timing cover (oil galley gaskets and oil pump gears), new clutch and CMAK, CJM fuel system items, and new differential (plus SPL diff and subframe bushings).

I'm looking to DIY the oil cooler, brake ducts, SPL FUCAs, ARC coolant reservoir and catch cans. I already have all those parts but I figure it makes sense to do all of those after I have Kevin do his work.

One consideration that just came up the other day... instead of getting TPs I have an opportunity to purchase some used LTHs. I think they are FI. Anyone think it's a bad idea? Either way I think it makes sense to do TP/LTH when Kevin pulls the motor and trans.

JARblue 05-01-2019 12:32 PM

Damn you Rusty... I'm eyeballing a good deal on a set of RB 2-piece rotors. Looking at around $1700 for front and rear rotors with open slots. Might be adding clutch to the DIY list :rofl2:

Yea the “Rabbit Hole Gang” doesn’t help lol. I got a decent deal on a pair of RB fronts, now the want for matching rear pair haunts me weekly. I just really like the open slot design.

Side note: would be cool if there’s something like “rabbit hole society” sticker, although I am long way from qualifying.

Can't go wrong with the RB rotors. Unless you are planning on going to a 6/4 BBK set up.

You see why I told you to take the arms apart and anti-seize before installing.

I'm wondering if I might be able to roll the trans out the rear of the car. Since I'll have the rear subframe and diff out. I'm guessing it won't fit under the rear bumper.

At this point, you might as well pull the rear bumper as well lol

How far up will you have the car? You'll have some room to move it around in the trans tunnel. I had mine just on jack stands and was able to slide it down enough to work inside it and get at the necessary other components for FW replacement.

I should be able to get it 22" off the ground. In the past I was limited to around 20" because of my floor jack. The new floor jack has a longer reach and higher lift.

That's exactly what I did for the Z1 CSCEK install years ago. But it was kind of a pain not being able to get it completely out of the way. With the rear subframe and diff out, I should be able to slide it back a good bit further even if I don't remove the rear bumper.

JARblue 11-18-2019 08:30 AM

Second guessing the ATI damper. My mechanic has had a couple that were damn near impossible to install/remove because they are machined with such tight tolerances. Proper machining would involve measuring the crank beforehand. I spoke with a couple of other knowledgeable individuals as well who echoed Kevin's concerns.

Anyone have additional thoughts on the matter?

JARblue 11-18-2019 08:32 AM

Danmar D-7 lift on the list now, too. It's the only lift I could find that fits my garage height and doesn't have to be anchored into the foundation.

Of course, I keep siphoning off the lift fund for other life matters. The most likely scenario now appears to be selling the Lexus to fund the lift.
