Drag racing times(any suggestions plz)
 

Hey guys, I just went to the drag strip for import alliance 2017 at beech bend raceway and this is my 2nd time going ever. I had really bad traction and I could not get my 60 foot under 2.150 seconds. I'm making 330whp and have hankook Ventus evo 2's on the car. They are 305mm wide which would seem to be plenty for a NA car. I am also lowered on bc coilover. Anyways my fastest time was a 13.3 and I read on here some people's getting 12.8s-9s on a stock 370z so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. I'm pretty disappointed as I thought I was going to get at least a high 12 second time now that I had bigger tires. With that being said I was the fastest out of 9-10 370zs that ran that day. The second closest was a 13.8 and he had full bolt ons with no tune. I talked to the people working the drag strip and they told me they would never be able to keep the track prepped because of how many street tires were on it. I've been driving a manual car for almost 5 years now and am not a noob nor a expert. I know how to feather the throttle and not blow the tires of it but even after moving the car would still slip pretty bad in first gear. Any suggestions ?? I just don't see how a stock 370 could run that fast. I made about 20 passes and shifts were perfect, launch was not. There were a couple of charger hellcats that hooked up really well but they had slicks.

Gotta heat the tires properly & they'll bite.
The launch is the most important part of drag racing,,,gonna have to practice heating tires & launching....car will actually bog out the hole a bit - when it bites.

Yeah I had a good couple launches with it bogging down and then taking off but I also had some that slipped and then caught. I have 2 step on the car and it feel like that I launched harder while not on the drag strip. For some reason I'm sliding hard in first on the strip. I'm gunna try a different strip next time maybe that will help.

Ive been drag racing for over 30 years. Just started racing the Z this year on Friday nite for fun. Want to get into the 12s .. basically stock.

Learned alot about the little 3.7 and the car. Biggest lessons are:
1. Air intake temp - lower is better, over 100F ? don't run it.
2. Oil temp - mine likes to stage at 160F. More is bad.
3. Weight - need to be at 3470 lbs or lighter w/driver. 5 gal of fuel max. Empty trunk.
4. Rear Wheel/tire rotating weight. Use a 285 drag radial, and buy the lightest rear wheel you can afford. This is critical.
5. Front tire/wheels - mine are 37lbs each. Factory sport wheel are 50 plus. Nismo wheels are even heavier!
6. Fuel - tried all kinds of racing fuel and blends. Pure 91 octane gas from Conoco has worked best. 95,100,105 oct all slowed it down.
7. Weather - density altitude of 2500 ft or less - or I dont leave the house.
8. Disable the yaw sensor and pull the brake fuse. Do a proper burnout.
9. Staging RPM is critical, get it right and it should 60 foot 2.0 - 2.05 repeatedly.
10. My car makes only 270whp and 225 torque and runs 13.30-13.40 with no tune and a 250lb driver!

Okay thank you for the advice! When you went out what was your 60 foot timing ? Also were you using street tires or radials ?

I went last night and had the 285/18 MT ET street SS drag radial on a Enkei wheel.

With the 7AT, staging at 1600 rpm my 60' times were 2.05 @ 13.39, 2.07 @ 13.44, 2.09 @ 13.48.

Car was 3490 lbs, on the track.

You can see that 60' times are critical to good ET numbers.

Thanks again for the advice, I will be looking at some drag radials/ slicks. Do you have any recommendations ?

I second about the air quality; here’s my slip with good air & 275/40/18 Goodyear’s on base Wheels...only mod was K&an drop in filters-car made 275whp on Dynojet Dyno,only 3-4 gals. Fuel in tank,,,but all interior was in place.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f20e731ebd.jpg

I’ve added 39whp since; with exhaust & CAI...+ Quaife helical locker & Line-loc....going in a couple weeks to knock out some 12’s

Smallest one's that will fit...Un-sure what diameter wheel fits over your brakes-But a 275/40/17 is a good choice@barely 26"
run a narrower tire up front with approx. same diameter.
305/35/18's are popular on 18x10.5/11...but those Hook w/twin-turbo car's & are a bit heavier.

Okay I'll be sure to get the smallest size possible. What's weird is that I hook really hard on the street, but at the drag strip I had less traction with the same 305 tires.

At the track, grooved tread in street tires, leave water all the way to the starting line. If the track crew doesn't mop it up, or use the torch to dry it, it can get bad.

We had a bunch of street cars Friday night, and the track prep was excellent. The head starter dude knows his stuff. When it would get a little slick, he would clean it, and spray it with VHT from a little pressure bottle, and we were back in business.

Buying tires will be a waste of money if you don't practice. If you practice your launch more I guarantee your times will improve. Also go to the track on a cool day. The heat will kill your times. I went yesterday on bald tires and pulled 1.91 60's babying my launch. My best 60' on street tires is a 1.79. If my Z can do it yours can too.
