Autocross Anyone?

Title is self explanatory. Does anyone autoX here? Whether in the 370 or not, it looks like a really fun hobby to get into. For those of you who are into it, any tips for someone who is trying to get into it for the first time?

I'm trying to find out what the various racing classes are, rules etc. I'm getting really excited about this, haha

Does anyone know what other cars might be in the 370's class?

AutoX Z

There's an autox thread in the track section, although its drifted towards the bottom recently. The 370Z is a good autox car and would probably be a great car if it could get camber in the front and not have stupid 19" wheels.

Starting next year it will be in CS (C Stock), BSP (B Street Prepared), and SMS (Street Modified Sport) depending on what mods you have done. CS is miata's and RX-8's, BSP is "rally" cars and old corvettes, and SMS is...well alot of different things.

Autox is a great driver training tool and definitely the easiest and cheapest way to get into motorsport.

I autox my 350Z. It's a very good car in a tight course. I just leave it in 2nd gear for most of the course. It's got enough torque to get out of the tight turns.

I run BSP class.

I did 18 auto-x events last year in the Z, loved it. I highly recommend it to everyone to at least try, it lets you feel what you car will do at the limit of traction. Unfortunately my mods have now sent me into BSP, but I ran stock class most of this year.

are most people turning VSD off for it? That may be an obvious question...still needs to be asked i guess.

I actually saw something that said the governing body (i forget the name now) isn't going to allow anyone to get into 3rd or above 67 mph in 2010. That seems plenty fast for these tight courses.

I turn off VDC in my car. It would counter-productive to leave it on. You're going to slide around a bit, but that's better than the computer kicking in and hampering the course.

Yes, you absolutely have to turn VDC off to use the full potential of the car at auto-x. The VDC is programmed to prevent you from slipping and sliding which you have to do to a certain extent in order to be quick. Besides that it is the best time to learn how to handle your car without a computer nanny, i.e. when there is nothing to crash into.

As for the speed limit, yes, SCCA has speed standards written into the rules, nothing new. Most courses top out at 60-65 mph and corners are rarely greater than 40 mph. Independent auto-x clubs don't have to follow these rules and will simply use what they feel is safe and prudent for the site. One event I went to we had 75-80 mph sweepers which was interesting, but typical speeds are below that.

yea this sounds awesome...im looking up events coming up, doesn't look like there is much until spring. Which makes sense, i guess.

I think auto-x's are an excellent tool to learn driving techniques. You are usually always at the limit of traction, but still maintain a safe environment (to you and the car). Plus, they are very cheap to do, and require very little prep. Before I went road racing, I auto-xed for 5+ years and learned a lot and had a great time - in both front and rear wheel drive cars. I haven't done it in a while, but have been tempted to take the z out.

right now i think the 370z is in B Stock it might be bumped but next year B stock cars are being bumped to C stock and a few other mix ups,

i have been autoXing with a local club here in the greensboro area for about 6 years..

i know its a couple hours from raleigh but your welcome to come out to some of the events next season.. they have them in greensboro , sanford danville and winston-salem

Yeah, I would like to do it, but early in the year, I am spending all of my free time prepping the race car. I have a busy winter planned: new paint job (includes sanding down and fiberglassing), new shocks, full prep, etc). I'll let you know if I change my mind. You should come to NHMS for a race weekend (SCCA).
