I think auto-x's are an excellent tool to learn driving techniques. You are usually always at the limit of traction, but still maintain a safe environment (to you and the car). Plus, they are very cheap to do, and require very little prep. Before I went road racing, I auto-xed for 5+ years and learned a lot and had a great time - in both front and rear wheel drive cars. I haven't done it in a while, but have been tempted to take the z out.
