Standard versus Sport brake for track day

If it's 16k difference, just buy a base and buy your own aftermarket brakes.

The Akebono kit in the sport package can dissipate heat much more efficiently and faster than the base brakes.

You need to remember. Nissan designed this as a production car for the road. Note: There are multiple trims available to suit a broad range of needs. That being said there are street pad compounds in the sport brakes and dot 3 fluid which is sufficient enough to stop you from the speed limits to 0 while commuting.

When you go to a track you're entering a specific realm of needs. A great analogy is you don't go to a competition event without the proper gear or training. You wont enjoy it and you won't get the most out of it.

Therefore, upgraded pads and fluids and Stainless steel lines are a must for your safety.

What Nissan has done with our platform is give us a great canvas to start with and the aftermarket (because they exist) gives us something to paint with.

If you are concerned about brakes fading, switch out your fluid to a high temp solution like Motul 5.1, Brembo LCF, Brembo HTC64, Endless or Project mU.

OEM pads should be fine till you get faster but will not last long at the track compared to a pad like the Endless MX72.

Base brakes will not do well on track, a fellow member on this forum DCocci was running his base brakes for almost a year and he frequently encountered brake fade and came back to the pits with all 4 wheels smoking. I do not recommend you track on base brakes.

I've noticed that a huge percentage of the people who post questions and answers on Facebook have not done the minimal amount of research on the topic that is available on these forums. Therefore a lot of wrong information is thrown out there. Alternative Facts, if you will.

While higher temp pads and fluids are critical they are not the only ways to improve braking. Upgraded (larger and stronger) brakes (discs, pads, calipers) can absorb and dissipate more heat.

And facebook is terrible for advice, any idiot can post something completely wrong and it get's spread around by more idiots and there is nothing to stop it. At least hear if some idiot posts something it can be removed, locked, or clearly replied to as wrong. While it's not perfect here either (I still don't believe the MC issue is real) it's much better than facebook.

Getting ANY information from Facebook is pointless. Especially the Z34 groups. I'm shocked that the vast majority of posters in those groups can manage to drink a glass of water without drowning, much less provide decent technical advice.

If you're gonna track, base brakes are going to be overwhelmed quickly. The base calipers do not provide enough force, the pads are sub-par and the fluid will boil.

With the sport brakes the calipers are big enough, the pads are just ok and the fluid will still boil.

You can buy a complete used Akebono brake kit on this forum in the classifieds section for about $1000 USD. You will not be able to do the same with any other aftermarket kit that is worth putting on. In my opinion, that's pretty much the least expensive, reliable and proven big brake kit you can put on the Z34.

If you only want the brakes, you can always get them used or from Z1 for a complete kit with great price, or go for a better option for less than the difference.

Factory brakes have failed and I believe almost killed A magazine editor during the VIR yearly shoot out a few years ago. The reason is the OEM pads. Upgrade those and I doubt you and most of us here will have them fail.
